PETTIGREW - CARICOM MEETING

March 7, 2003 No. 24

Media representatives are advised that International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew will host a meeting of trade ministers from the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) in Trinidad and Tobago on March 10 to engage Caribbean countries on global and hemispheric trade negotiations.

The CARICOM member countries are Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas (member of the Community but not of the Common Market), Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Montserrat is a member, but remains a dependency of the U.K.

On March 11, Minister Pettigrew will deliver a speech entitled "Opportunities for the Caribbean in a Global Trading System" to the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Manufacturers' Association.

Following his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Minister Pettigrew will go to Mexico City on March 12, where he will meet the new Secretary of Economy, Fernando Canales Clariond. Minister Pettigrew will also meet with Mr. Canales' predecessor, Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez, who is now Secretary of Foreign Relations. Discussions will focus on Canada's role in NAFTA (which is approaching its 10th anniversary), developments in FTAA negotiations, and preparations for the WTO Ministerial meeting that will be hosted by Mexico this September.
