MEDIA ADVISORIES

Media representatives are advised that Ron J. Duhamel, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Western Economic Diversification) (Francophonie), will visit Cairo, Egypt, on February 16 and 17, 2001.

Minister Duhamel will lead the Canadian delegation at a meeting of the Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers (CONFEJES) and at the ministerial meeting of the Games of La Francophonie International Committee (GFIC), where he will present a progress report on the preparations for the IV Games of La Francophonie. The IV Games will take place in the Ottawa-Hull region from July 14 to 24, 2001.

Established in 1969, the CONFEJES brings together representatives of more than 35 countries. Part of its mandate is responsibility for the continued success of the Games, which were launched at the Francophonie Summit held in Quebec City in 1987.

The GFIC, which reports to the CONFEJES, is tasked with supervising the organization of the Games by the host country. This includes approving the specifications, the Games program, the choice of sites for the sports and cultural events, the accommodations and the provisional budgets of the Organizing Committee.

Nous informons les représentants des médias que le ministre des Anciens combattants et secrétaire d'État (Diversification de l'économie de l'Ouest canadien) (Francophonie),

M. Ronald J. Duhamel, effectuera une visite au Caire, en Égypte, les 16 et 17 février.

Le ministre Duhamel dirigera la délégation canadienne à la Conférence des ministres de la Jeunesse et des Sports (CONFEJES) et à la réunion ministérielle du Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie pour y présenter notamment un bilan des préparatifs des IV^es Jeux qui se dérouleront dans la région d'Ottawa-Hull, du 14 au 24 juillet 2001.

Fondée en 1969, la CONFEJES rassemble des représentants de plus de 35 pays et a notamment pour mandat de mettre en oeuvre et d'assurer la pérennité des Jeux de la Francophonie, dont l'idée a été lancée lors du Sommet de Québec en 1987.

Relevant de la CONFEJES, le Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie a pour mandat d'assurer la supervision générale de l'organisation des Jeux confiée au pays hôte, y compris d'approuver le cahier des charges, le programme des Jeux, le choix des sites où auront lieu les compétitions sportives et les concours culturels, les lieux d'hébergement et les budgets provisionnels du Comité organisateur.
