MANLEY - VISIT TO LONDON, PARIS, RIGA AND BERLIN

John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will be visiting London, England, Paris, France, Riga, Latvia, and Berlin, Germany from September 3 to 11. John McKay, Member of Parliament for Scarborough East, will also accompany the Minister.

While in London, Mr. Manley will attend a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). He and his colleagues will discuss recent developments in Fiji, The Gambia, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and the Soloman Islands, as well as appropriate Commonwealth action in support of democratic institutions and human rights in those countries. Members are also likely to discuss issues of concern in other countries, including Zimbabwe.

In Paris, the Minister will meet with Hubert Védrine, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, and will deliver a speech on Canadian foreign policy at the Cercle de l'Union interalliée. Mr. Manley will also call on Donald Johnston, Secretary- General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

In Riga, Mr. Manley will meet with Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Foreign Minister Indulis Berzins. The President and Foreign Minister will join Minister Manley at a ceremony celebrating the success of CIDA's Translation and Terminology Center in Latvia.

In Berlin, Mr. Manley will meet with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and will deliver a speech on Canadian foreign policy to members of the Commerzbank and the German Council on Foreign Relations.
