GRAHAM - VISIT TO EUROPE

Media representatives are advised that Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham will visit the United Kingdom, France and Germany from January 29 to February 1, 2002 to meet with his counterparts in London, Paris and Berlin for the first time. Their discussions will focus on bilateral and international issues including peace and stability in Afghanistan, the international campaign against terrorism and the upcoming June 2002 G8 Summit, over which Canada will preside. In London, Minister Graham will also participate in the first meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Terrorism on January 29, and the Eighteenth Meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) on the Harare Declaration on January 30.

CMAG will review recent developments in Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Fiji and the Solomon Islands. The Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Terrorism will develop an action plan to be presented at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Coolum, Australia, March 2 to 5. The plan will set out objectives for Commonwealth action and cooperation against terrorism.

While in London, Mr. Graham will also meet with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on January 30.

In Paris, on January 31, Mr. Graham will meet with Foreign Affairs Minister Hubert Védrine, National Assembly Foreign Affairs Commission Chairman François Loncle, and French Senate Commission on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces Chairman Xavier de Villepin.

In Berlin, on February 1, the Minister will meet with Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs Chairman Hans-Ulrich Klose.
