PETTIGREW - TRADE MISSION TO INDIA

Media representatives are advised that International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew will lead a trade mission to India from April 21 to 26, 2002. The mission, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and fostering increased economic cooperation between the two countries, will visit Mumbai and Delhi, two of India's most influential business centres.

On April 22, the Minister will participate in a plenary session on Canada's capabilities and its potential to expand its trade relations with India, followed by a press briefing. The same day, the Minister will meet with the Governor of Maharashtra, Dr. P.C. Alexander. Mr. Pettigrew will then take part in the opening of the Canadian Wood Products Showroom and attend a contract signing ceremony.

On April 23, Mr. Pettigrew will participate in an editorial board meeting with the Times of India/Economic Times. The Minister will also meet with Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, and take part in an investment luncheon with Tata Sons Ltd.

On April 24, Mr. Pettigrew will visit Agra.

In Delhi, on April 25, Mr. Pettigrew will participate in the Canada-India Business Forum, which aims to develop a deeper understanding of the possibilities of bilateral trade between the two countries. Minister Pettigrew will also hold a number of meetings with central government ministers, including Minister of Commerce and Industry Murasoli Maran; Minister of Railways Nitish Kumar; Minister of Power Suresh Prabhu; Minister of Coal and Mines Ram Vilas Paswan; and Minister of Communications and Information Technology and Parliamentary Affairs Pramod Mahajan. The same day, Mr. Pettigrew will attend a contract signing ceremony.

On April 26, Mr. Pettigrew will deliver a speech at the Confederation of Indian Industry National Conference and attend a working luncheon with Minister of Commerce and Industry Maran.
