Address by Benjamin Barber

Media representatives are advised that Benjamin Barber, author of Jihad vs. McWorld, will give the keynote address "Can
Democracy Survive the War between Globalization and Terrorism?" in Ottawa on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at an academic
round table sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The round table on "Clash of
Civilizations?" (May 2 to 4) will bring together international experts to explore differing world views about the nature of
global divisions, the causes of terrorism and alienation, sentiments about the United States and Western society, and the
future role of democracy.
Mr. Barber is a professor at the Maryland School of Public Affairs and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences,
University of Maryland. He is the author of numerous books, including Strong Democracy and An Aristocracy of Everyone.
With Patrick Watson, Barber also created and wrote the prizewinning television series and book The Struggle for
Democracy. He writes regularly for Harper's, the Atlantic Monthly and many other publications.
