PETTIGREW VISIT TO PERU

Media representatives are advised that International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew is travelling to Peru from Monday, October 28, to Wednesday, October 30, 2002.

On Monday, October 28, in Lima, Minister Pettigrew will meet representatives of Canadian commercial interests in Peru during a breakfast sponsored by Export Development Canada.

Minister Pettigrew will later meet with the Peruvian Vice Minister of International Trade and Tourism, His Excellency Mr. Alfredo Ferrero Diez Canseco.

Minister Pettigrew will then meet with President Alejandro Toledo and Mr. Carlos Bruce, Minister of Housing Construction and Sanitation. President Toledo will host a luncheon that Minister Pettigrew will attend. Following the luncheon, President Toledo and Minister Pettigrew will hold a press conference.

That afternoon, at a lunch hosted by the President of the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Javier Monterro, and attended by the Prime Minister of Peru, His Excellency Mr. Luis Solari, Minister Pettigrew will give an address on the importance of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) for South America, Peru and Canada.

Following his address, Minister Pettigrew will meet with Prime Minister Solari.

On Tuesday, October 29, Minister Pettigrew will travel to Anta to visit the Barrick Gold Corporation's Pierina Mine. In Anta, Minister Pettigrew will also meet local authorities and will visit housing and environmental projects. On this visit, Minister Pettigrew will be accompanied by the Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru, His Excellency Mr. Jaime Quijandría.
