Ship Repair
Naval vessels are an important investment of the Department of National
Defence and the Canadian Forces. Civilians have an important role
to play in the repair, modification and refitting of these vessels
and their equipment. Employees responsible for ship repair perform
various tasks including the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance,
repair, modification, quality control and sea trials of mechanical
equipment, weapons, missiles and torpedoes as well as the propulsion
system of vessels.

Hilary, Electronic Systems Technician, Ship Repair
Hilary is responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of communications equipment on HMCS Ships. A 2-year electronics program at a community college, followed by a 3 year Electronics Apprenticeship Program, and a job as a technician in an electronic warfare shop qualified Hilary for this challenging position. She enjoys working with fellow staff and military members and fixing the equipment on board ships. Hilary especially appreciates the systems knowledge she has gained through on the job training opportunities. " I like working with the military, learning about life on board ship, and how the systems operate in different environments." Being given the chance to go to sea to complete work on systems and volunteering to be part of a mobile repair party make ship repair for the Department of National Defence exciting and rewarding.
