Two men with distinguished military careers invited to attend this year's Memorial Cup will get a chance to go back in time to a milestone event in their professional hockey careers.

Colonel (Ret) Frank Hanton and reservist Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Staniowski, former members of Western Canada Championship teams that played in the Memorial Cup, will be part of the opening ceremonies May 20 to 26 in Halifax.

LCol Staniowski said being part of the Memorial Cup's opening ceremony will bring back many memories of his hockey career.

"There is no doubt playing in the 1974 Memorial Cup was probably one of the most, if not the most, exciting thing that happened to me," he said. "It was a real thrill. I can tell you there are times I pine for the game. I know that for a fact."

LCol Staniowski, born in Moose Jaw, Sask., joined the Regina Pats in 1971 and was a standout member with the club until he left in 1975. A key element to the Pats' 1974 Memorial Cup Championship, he was the team's Most Valuable Player in 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was also the MVP of the Western Canada Junior Hockey League in 1974 and 1975.

In 1919 the Ontario Hockey Association donated the Memorial Cup to the Canadian Hockey Association. The annual tournament honours the memory of amateur hockey players who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War.

This year the CF is an associate sponsor of Canada's premier junior hockey championship. The DND logo will be featured prominently on all flyers or pamphlets promoting the games. Two kiosks will be set up and staffed by military recruiters.

About 90 000 people are expected to

attend the games and another 2.3 million fans will watch the action on television. Most are expected to be between 17 and 24, the age group CF recruiters have traditionally targeted for military service.

It will be the first time the Memorial Cup is held in Atlantic Canada.

The St. Louis Blues went on to select LCol Staniowski with their first pick in the 1975 National Hockey League (NHL) amateur draft. He kicked off his NHL career playing 11 games during the 1975-76 season. As a rookie, LCol Staniowski was named starting goaltender for the team's first-round playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres, playing all three games.

LCol Staniowski won the Charlie Conacher NHL Award for Humanities in 1979; Wayne Gretzky would win the award the following year.

After a 10-year professional hockey career, LCol Staniowski retired, having played 209 NHL games with St. Louis, Winnipeg and Hartford.

LCol Staniowski will be in the company of Mr. Hanton, recognized as the top train buster of the Allied Forces during the Second World War. Mr. Hanton played in the 1939 Memorial Cup after his team, the Kenora Thistles, won the Western Canada Junior title.

The following year, Mr. Hanton joined the Hibbing, Minnesota, Monarch Hockey Team and played in the International Hockey League, which was classified as semi-professional. The Second World War cut Mr. Hanton's hockey career short.

He returned to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 as a fighter pilot. Mr. Hanton flew a variety of missions and won a Distinguished Flying Cross. He specialized in low-level daylight intruder attacks against enemy-held airfields, rail lines and installations.

How much would you pay for a sailor?

CF members will do just about anything for charity; some will even sell their bodies.

Sub-Lieutenant Kris Phillips raised $900 for the Humane Society of Ottawa- Carleton in a bachelor auction May 6.

"It was a little nerve-wracking," said SLt Phillips, "but it was for a worthy cause and it was an experience I will never forget."

SLt Phillips, a navy public affairs officer at NDHQ, was the only military participant among 18 bachelors, who ranged from firefighters to local radio celebrities to Ottawa Senators' defenceman Wade Redden, who brought in $7,100. More than $50,000 was raised that evening for the Humane Society.

"The men in uniform were extremely popular last year," said Sue Wilson, fundraising manager of the annual For Pet's Sake auction.

Men in uniform was chosen as this year's theme as "they go for the highest bids."

SLt Phillips will escort the winning bidder, Trudy Robertson, on a Canada Day sail aboard HMCS Toronto to watch the fireworks in Toronto harbour.

Ms. Robertson has a keen interest in the navy, as her father was the Commanding Officer of HMCS Carleton. "What can I say," she said, "I'm a sailor."

"It's great to see the many volunteers from across the community coming together for such a good cause," said Wendy Daniels, SLt Phillips' auctioneer and local radio host.

Ms. Daniels also had a message for CF members across the country and around the world: "You make us proud to be Canadian."

Mme Daniels avait aussi un message à transmettre à tous les membres des FC des quatre coins du pays et du monde : « Vous nous rendez fiers d'être; Canadiens. »
