The CF has set a Guinness world record- not for having the world's biggest tank or ship, but for mailing a couple of postcards.

In August 1994 the CF mailed two postcards overseas, one to Rwanda, the other to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Together, they had been signed by more than 70 000 Canadians who wanted to send their best wishes to CF peacekeepers stationed in those countries.

But it wasn't the number of signatures on the cards that made Guinness folks pay attention, it was the postcards' size: at 3 m x 9.5 m, they edged out the previous

record of 3 m x 6 m, set by a postcard sent by the French Philatelic Society.

This idea came to Lieutenant-Commander Jacques Fauteux-then a Lieutenant-of Director General Public Affairs when he was in a washroom and saw the handwriting on the wall. "People had written graffiti on a board," he said, which triggered the notion of sending greetings from Canadians to CF members overseas.

And he thought big: "Wouldn't it be nice to get a world record for doing something outrageous?"

The postcards were designed-they were black and white to save taxpayers' money-by Ottawa cartoonist Bado (Guy Badeaux), printed and sent across Canada-one to Québec; City, the other to Vancouver-to collect people's messages at public events.

LCdr Fauteux had been planning to ship the monster postcards overseas solely via a

service flight, not through Canada Post; but the record keepers had news for him: "Guinness said we had to mail them too. I couldn't believe it."

With $18 worth of stamps affixed to them, the postcards were mailed to the nearest military bases in the two provinces before a Hercules could fly the Québec; City card to Rwanda and the Vancouver card to Bosnia.

Peacekeepers were surprised-and pleased -with the world's biggest postcards. "They said 'What the heck is it?' They couldn't believe it because it was so huge," said LCdr Fauteux.

"And they were happy they were not forgotten," referring to the warm wishes written on both sides of the cards.

Where are the postcards now? "I don't know," said LCdr Fauteux, "but the Canadian War Museum would love to have them."

Le capc Jacques Fauteux - lieutenant à l'époque; - de la Direction gén;érale; des affaires publiques, a eu l'idée; en observant les

graffitis sur le mur des toilettes. Pourquoi ne pas envoyer des souhaits aux FC outre-mer?

Il a vu grand : « Pourquoi ne pas en profiter pour battre un record du monde en faisant quelque chose de démesur;é? »

Les deux cartes, conçues; par le caricaturiste Bado (Guy Badeaux), d'Ottawa, et imprimées; en noir et blanc - par respect pour les contribuables - ont ét;é envoyées;, l'une à Québec; et l'autre à Vancouver, pour recueillir les messages des gens dans le cadre d'activités; publiques.

Le capc Fauteux avait prévu; expédier; ces deux cartes géantes; par un vol de service et non par Postes Canada, mais les gardiens du record ne l'entendaient pas ainsi : « Quand Guinness nous a dit qu'il fallait les poster, je n'en revenais pas. »

Avec 18 $ de timbres, les deux cartes ont pris le chemin de la base militaire la plus proche dans les deux provinces avant qu'un Hercules transporte la carte de Québec; au Rwanda et celle de Vancouver en Bosnie.

Nos Casques bleus étaient; très; surpris, mais aussi heureux de recevoir les deux cartes postales les plus grandes du monde. « Ils se sont exclamés; avec des "Mais qu'estce que c'est que ça;!" Ils n'en croyaient pas leurs yeux tellement les cartes étaient; immenses », a raconté le capc Fauteux.

« Ils étaient; contents de voir que tant de gens pensaient à eux », a-t-il ajouté en faisant allusion aux messages chaleureux qui couvraient les deux côt;és; des cartes.

Que sont devenues ces deux cartes postales? « Je l'ignore, mais le Musée; canadien de la guerre aimerait bien les avoir », a conclu le capc Fauteux.
