Captain Maryse Carmichael knows what it's like to be on "cloud nine" - or at least on #3 inner left wing. That's because the 29-year-old is the first female pilot to be selected to fly with the Snowbirds. She and Capt Wayne Mott, the other new member of the team, will occupy inner flying positions during the first year of their three-year postings with the Snowbirds.

For the first time in their 30-year history, the Snowbirds have selected a woman, Captain Maryse Carmichael, as one of their pilots.

Originally from Québec; City, Capt Carmichael, 29, was one of three pilots to try out for two team positions. She and Capt Wayne Mott, 35, were named to the team in mid-November after a lengthy and demanding selection process.

"For me it is still unbelievable," said Capt Carmichael. "It has not sunk in yet, and will probably take a week or two before it does. I am still on cloud nine."

Capt Carmichael made her first bid to become a Snowbird three years ago. Although she didn't make the team then, she vowed to try again.

According to Capt Andy Cook, Snowbirds Team Co-ordinator and Number 11 pilot, just making it to the tryouts is no small feat. "Just to even get there, they have to be outstanding pilots," he said. Ideally, pilots should possess 1300 hours of jet flying time and their Commanding Officer's recommendation. In addition to their flying capability, pilots are also assessed on whether they'd be assets to the team and the CF.

Focussing on two types of flying-close formation and low-level aerobatics, pilots are assessed after 12 flights. "We take the ones that perform the best," said Capt Cook.

Capt Carmichael was one of the best. "We didn't select her because she is a female," he said. "We selected her because she is the best pilot for the job."

A CF member since 1990, Capt Carmichael was a Challenger pilot first with 434 Squadron and more recently with 412 Transport Squadron in Ottawa. She has flown the likes of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien; around the world, bringing her jet-hour tally to more than 2400 hours.

As far as all the media attention she's been receiving, Capt Carmichael said she was expecting some of it. "I knew this would be a first, but it's a bit overwhelming." The day after the news broke, she did nearly a dozen interviews, in addition to training flights with the team.

But Capt Carmichael says she's glad to be a role model, not only for young girls, but boys as well. "If they would like to do something, and no one has done if before, it does not mean they can't do it," she said. "They can work at it, and it happens. It does happen."

Le capt Carmichael a présent;é sa première; demande pour faire partie des Snowbirds il y a trois ans, mais sans succès.; Qu'à cela ne tienne, elle est revenue à la charge.

Selon le capt Andy Cook, coordonnateur de l'équipe; des Snowbirds et pilote numéro; 11, une simple qualification pour les essais ne constitue pas un mince exploit. « Pour parvenir à cette étape;, explique-t-il, il faut déj;à être; un pilote exceptionnel. » Idéalement;, un pilote doit avoir 1 300 heures de temps de vol comme pilote de jet et une recommandation de son commandant. En plus des exigences comme pilote, on évalue; si les candidats représentent; un atout pour l'équipe; et pour les FC.

Dans des épreuves; où l'accent est mis sur deux types de vol - formation serrée; et acrobaties aériennes; à basse altitude - les pilotes sont évalu;és; après; 12 vols. « Nous choisissons les meilleurs », précise; le capt Cook.

C'est le cas du capt Carmichael. « Nous ne l'avons pas choisie parce qu'elle est une femme, souligne le capt Cook, mais parce qu'elle est la meilleure pilote pour ce travail. »

Dans les FC depuis 1990, le capt Carmichael a ét;é pilote de Challenger d'abord dans le 434^e Escadron, puis, plus récemment;, dans le 412^e Escadron de transport, à Ottawa. Elle compte autant d'heures de vol autour du monde que le premier ministre Jean Chrétien;, comme en fait foi son dossier de plus de 2 400 heures de vol comme pilote de jet.

En ce qui a trait à l'attention que les médias; lui avaient accordée;, le capt Carmichael s'y attendait un peu. « Je savais qu'il s'agissait d'une première;, dit-elle, mais cela a pris des proportions imprévues.; » Le lendemain du jour où la nouvelle a ét;é annoncée;, elle a accordé près; de douze entrevues en plus des vols d'entraînement; avec l'équipe.;

Le capt Carmichael se dit contente d'être; un exemple non seulement pour les jeunes filles mais aussi pour les garçons.; « Quand un individu veut faire quelque chose qui n'a jamais ét;é fait cela ne veut pas dire que cela lui sera impossible à réaliser.; S'il y travaille, il aura des résultats; - il en aura assurément; », précise; le capt Carmichael.
