Christmas dinners: a time-honoured military tradition

Les dîners; de Noël; : une tradition militaire consacrée;

For more than 100 years, CF units have celebrated the holiday season with a traditional Christmas dinner.

The all-ranks meal, held in December before Christmas Day, usually features a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. It's an opportunity for military personnel to get together in a relaxed setting and wish each other a happy holiday season.

Perhaps the most symbolic part of the dinner is when the officers serve the NCMs their meal. It's a small way for the officers to thank the troops for their hard work over the past year.

On December 9, about 110 reservists, veterans and cadets of the Toronto Scottish Regiment (Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's Own) sat down to a turkey dinner in Fort York Armoury. Following tradition, the commanding officer of the Toronto Scottish, Lieutenant-Colonel Julian Chapman, gave up his command for the day to the youngest member of the regiment, Private Matthew Rydahl, 18.

"(The dinner) is a great opportunity to recognize the year's achievements, give thanks for the last year and look forward to the New Year," said LCol Chapman.

At CFB Gagetown, 350 members of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, held their Christmas dinner December 14. The event was the culmination of the unit's regimental week, which also saw the celebration of the RCR's birthday (December 21).

During the 2 RCR Christmas dinner, commanding officer LCol Jim Simms

stepped down in favour of Pte Brad Martin, 19, the youngest private in the unit. The battalion's oldest corporal- Cpl Dan Wiese-then switched jackets with the regimental sergeant-major of 2 RCR, Chief Warrant Officer Eric Christianson.

During the dinner, the Miller Trophy was presented to the 2 RCR soldier of the year, Cpl Duane Johnson of the battalion's pipes and drums.

In New Westminster, B.C., 80 members of the Royal Westminster Regiment celebrated the holidays with an all-ranks dinner December 9. After the unit's junior ranks beat a combined officers and senior NCO's team 4-1 in floor hockey, Pte Robert Balchunas, 17, replaced LCol Glenn Richmond as commanding officer for the day.

La partie sans doute la plus symbolique du dîner; a lieu lorsque les officiers servent les MR. Il s'agit pour les officiers de les remercier d'une modeste façon; pour le travail accompli tout au long de l'année.;

À la BFC Gagetown, 350 membres du 2^e Bataillon, The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR), ont pris part au dîner; de Noël; qui a eu lieu le 14 décembre.; Le dîner; marquait également; la fin de la semaine régimentaire; de l'unité au cours de laquelle a également; ét;é cél;ébr;é l'anniversaire du RCR (21 décembre;).

Lors du dîner; de Noël; du 2 RCR, le commandant, le lcol Jim Simms, a remis le commandement au sdt Brad Martin, 19 ans, le plus jeune soldat de l'unité.; Le caporal le plus âg;é du bataillon, le cpl Dan Wiese, a ensuite procéd;é à l'échange; de vestes avec le sergent-major régimentaire; du 2 RCR, l'adjuc Eric Christianson.

On a profité du dîner; pour remettre le trophée; Miller au soldat de l'année; du 2 RCR, le cpl Duane Johnson du corps de cornemuseurs et tambours du bataillon.

À New Westminster, C.B., 80 membres du Royal Westminster Regiment ont cél;ébr;é les Fêtes; par un dîner; - tous grades qui a eu lieu le 9 décembre.; Après; la victoire de 4 à 1 de l'équipe; des caporaux et soldats de l'unité sur l'équipe; des officiers et des sous-officiers supérieurs; au hockey en salle, le sdt Robert Balchunas, 17 ans, a remplacé le lcol Glenn Richmond à titre de commandant pour la journée.;
