Le 9 EG de Rouyn-Noranda est la seule unité de la Réserve; de l'Armée; de terre de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue.; Sappers bridge the gap in northern QuebecBy Aline Dubois In just 40 hours sappers from 9th Field Engineer Squadron (9 FES), of Rouyn- Noranda, Que., built a bridge that today is the delight of outdoor enthusiasts from the nearby municipality of Destor and surrounding communities. The new bridge, which is 15 m long and has a capacity of 35 t, spans Paré Creek, which winds its way through Destor. It's no exaggeration to say that 9 FES sappers worked without a break: Exercise BERGE CONQUISE kept them busy round the clock from October 19 to 21. The members of 9 FES should be proud of their feat of engineering, says Captain Pascal Boucher, the public affairs officer for 9 FES. "The; people of this community were extremely grateful for this gesture," he said. "We; should all recognize the team spirit and unflagging efforts of 9 FES members who have enhanced the squadron's reputation." The initiative for the bridge stems from efforts in 1995 of community members who approached the commanding officer of 9 FES at that time, Major Louis Laliberté.; The aim was to turn an old railway line between Rouyn-Noranda and Taschereau into a recreational trail that would be linked to the Route verte du Québec.; Since this initial contact, 9 FES has helped the Corporation du parc linéaire;, a non-profit organization in the area, make its plan to build seven bridges a reality. 9 FES is the only Army Reserve unit in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue; region.
