Place aux athlètes; des FC

Pendant la cér;émonie; du Mérite; sportif des FC où l'on rendait un hommage particulier aux officiels, le Chef d'état-major; de la Défense;, le Gén;éral; Raymond Henault, a fait remarquer que même; si les officiels n'étaient; pas toujours appréci;és; ou remerciés; pour leurs efforts, leur travail est essentiel au succès; du programme sportif des FC.

« Ceux qui choisissent de devenir officiels entreprennent un travail stimulant », a indiqué le Gén; Henault, qui a pris la parole au cours de la soirée; annuelle de remise des prix à Ottawa, le 5 octobre. « Ils ont à relever les défis; propres à leur sport avec la même; ardeur avec laquelle ils relèvent; ceux inhérents; à leur carrière;, qui souvent, se déroule; dans les FC. »

Toute personne qui s'engage dans le programme sportif des FC - comme athlète;, entraîneur; ou officiel - mérite; que l'on reconnaisse les efforts qu'elle déploit;,

a-t-il ajouté.; Ces personnes travaillent pour que le programme sportif soit non seulement possible, mais très; agréable.;

Il importe que les militaires des FC, athlètes; ou non, soient en bonne condition physique, si on veut maintenir une force apte au combat, a souligné le Gén; Henault. Mais participer aux programmes sportifs, c'est bien plus qu'une simple question de condition physique; c'est se permettre d'acquérir; des compétences; dans différents; domaines, notamment en leadership et en travail d'équipe.;

Outre la présentation; de nombreux prix lors de la soirée; de gala, trois nouveaux militaires ont ét;é intronisés; au Temple de la renommée; sportive des FC et cinq autres ont ét;é inscrits au tableau d'honneur sportif.

Ont fait leur entrée; au Temple de la renommée; le Caporal Steve Cyr, pour sa performance au biathlon, de même; que le Cpl Clifford Hays et le Sgt EM (ret) Ralph Cathline qui ont tous deux excellé au tir.

Les nouveaux militaires à figurer au tableau d'honneur sont l'Adjudant-maître; Cindy Rafuse, le Sgt Maryse Ayotte, le Major (ret) J.P. Toupin et le Sgt (ret) Dan Gagnon, qui ont tous excellé dans les jeux multidisciplinaires. Le Lieutenant de vaisseau (ret) John Power a vu son nom figurer au tableau pour s'être; démarqu;é au squash.

Chaque él;ément; a sélectionn;é ses lauréats; dans les diverses catégories.; Le choix des lauréats; nationaux a ét;é fait à partir de ces nominations.

Le choix de l'athlète; masculin de l'année; s'est porté sur le Bombardier Christian Marmen, un coureur de l'état-major; de l'Armée; de terre. Le titre d'athlète; féminine; par excellence a ét;é décern;é au Ltv Heather Beynon, une nageuse de l'état-major; des Forces maritimes.

L'entraîneur; masculin de l'année; des

FC est le Ltv Tony Zezza, un entraîneur; en natation de l'état-major; des Forces maritimes; chez les femmes, le prix a ét;é attribué au Cpl Wanda Burton de l'état-; major de la Force aérienne.; L'entraîneur; civil de l'année; est François; Beaupré du SREIFC, entraîneur; de biathlon; du côt;é féminin;, Sandi Bruff, civile au sein du SREIFC, s'occupe de l'entraînement; au soccer.

Le Caporal-chef Tony Thompson, officiel au basket-ball, au QGDN, a remporté le titre d'officiel de l'année.; Finalement, le choix de l'équipe; de l'année; s'est porté sur l'équipe; de ballon-balai féminin; de la 8^e Escadre Trenton.

CF athletes honoured

In a year when the CF Sports Awards Ceremony paid special tribute to the officials, Chief of the Defence Staff, General Raymond Henault said while officials are not always appreciated or thanked for their efforts, the work they do is vitally important to the ongoing success of the CF sports program.

"Those who choose to become officials take on a challenging job," said Gen Henault, addressing the annual national awards evening in Ottawa, October 5. "They face the challenges of their sports with the same dedication they face the challenges of their careers, many of which are in the CF."

Everyone involved in the CF sports program from athletes to coaches and officials deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts, he said. They work to make the sports program not only possible, but highly enjoyable.

Physical fitness for CF members, athletes or not, is important for maintaining a combat capable force, said Gen Henault. But, participation in sports programs is not just about physical fitness, it builds skills in all kinds of areas, including leadership and teamwork.

In addition to presenting numerous awards, the gala evening including the induction of three new members to the CF Sports Hall of Fame and five to the CF Sports Honour Roll.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame were Corporal Steve Cyr for his contributions in the sport of biathlon and Cpl Clifford Hays and Staff Sgt (Ret) Ralph Cathline, both who have excelled in the sport of shooting.

New members of the Honour Roll are Master Warrant Officer Cindy Rafuse, Sergeant Maryse Ayotte, Major (Ret) J.P. Toupin and Sgt (Ret) Dan Gagnon, all in multi-sports. Lieutenant(N) (Ret) John Power was inducted for his contribution to the sport of squash.

Each environment selected their award winners in a variety of categories. The national winners were selected from those nominations.

The overall male Athlete of the Year was Bombardier Christian Marmen, a runner from Land Staff. Top female Athlete was Lt(N) Heather Beynon, a swimmer from Maritime Staff.

CF male Coach of the Year was Lt(N) Tony Zezza, a swim coach from Maritime Staff, while the CF female Coach was Cpl Wanda Burton, a swim coach from Air Staff.The civilian male Coach was François; Beaupré, a biathlon coach with CFRETS, while the civilian female Coach was Sandi Bruff, who coaches soccer with CFRETS.

The Official of the Year was Master Corporal Tony Thompson, a basketball official at NDHQ.The overall Team of the Year went to the 8 Wing Trenton Women's Broomball Team.

In a year when the CF Sports Awards honoured the officials, Gen Henault presented the Environmental Official of the Year award to MCpl Thompson representing NDHQ.

Among the inductees to the CF Sports Hall of Fame was Ssgt (Ret) Ralph Cathline, who excelled in shooting and represented Canada in 1966 at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He was presented with his award by Gen Henault.

Parmi les membres du Temple de la renommée; sportive des FC, on compte le Sgt (ret) Cathline qui excellait au tir et a représent;é le Canada lors des Jeux de l'Empire britannique et du Commonwealth

en 1966. Le Gén; Henault lui a remis son prix.

Cpl Cyr, an outstanding athlete in the sports of biathlon and cross-country skiing was inducted into the CF Sports Hall of Fame by Gen Henault.
