Four members of A Company, the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI) Battle Group were killed and eight others injured April 17 by friendly fire in Afghanistan. A Company is the paratroop company in 3 PPCLI.

The incident occurred when a US Air National Guard F-16 pilot dropped a 500 lb (225 kg) bomb on the soldiers who were conducting a night-time, live-fire exercise. The company-level exercise was part of routine training being carried out by the battle group 14 km south of the Kandahar airfield.

Le 17 avril, quatre membres de la Compagnie A du Groupement tactique du 3^e Bataillon, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI), ont ét;é tués; et huit autres blessés; par un tir ami en Afghanistan. La Compagnie A est une compagnie de parachutistes au sein du 3 PPCLI.

Le drame s'est produit lorsqu'un pilote de F-16 de la garde nationale aérienne; américaine; a largué une bombe de 225 kg sur les soldats qui effectuaient un exercice de tir réel; durant la nuit. La compagnie participait à cet exercice qui faisait partie de l'entraînement; de routine du groupement tactique et se déroulait; à 14 km au sud de l'aérodrome; de Kandahar.

Sgt Marc Daniel Léger;, 29

Sergeant Léger; was born in Cornwall, Ont., on March 26, 1973. He enrolled with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders as an Infantryman in March 1991 and later transferred to the Regular Force in February 1993.

He completed Battle School and was posted to 1 PPCLI where he served as a Rifleman. In 1996, he was posted to 3 PPCLI.

Sgt Léger; served three tours in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, in 1994 with UNPROFOR, in 1997 and 2000 with SFOR. He received a DCDS Commendation for demonstrating initiative and compassion in dealing with displaced persons and returnees in the area of the Livno Valley, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Sgt Léger; served as a volunteer firefighter with the Lancaster Joint Fire Department for three years and also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

Sgt Marc Daniel Léger;, 29 ans

Il a servi à titre de pompier volontaire au sein des services d'incendie de Lancaster pendant trois ans et fait partie des bén;évoles; oeuvrant pour l'organisme Habitat for Humanity.

Cpl Ainsworth Dyer, 24

Corporal Ainsworth Dyer was born in Montréal;, Que., on July 29, 1977 and resided in Toronto, Ont. He enrolled with the 48th Highlanders of Canada as an Infantryman in February 1996 and transferred to the Regular Force in October 1997.

After completing Battle School, Cpl Dyer was posted to 3 PPCLI in the spring of 1998, where he served as a Rifleman and deployed with 3 PPCLI on Operation PALLADIUM in 2000.

Cpl Ainsworth Dyer, 24 ans

Le caporal Ainsworth Dyer est né à Montréal; (Qué.;) le 29 juillet 1977 et résidait; à Toronto (Ont.). Il s'est enrôl;é en février; 1996 comme fantassin dans le 48th Highlanders of Canada et a ét;é muté à la Force réguli;ère; en octobre 1997.

Pte Richard Anthony Green, 21

Private Richard Anthony Green was born in Edmonton, Alta., May 26, 1980 and resided in Hubbards, N.S. After graduating from Forest Heights Community School in June 1998, he enrolled in the CF in September 1998.

Pte Green completed Battle School and was posted to 3 PPCLI in May 1999, where he served as a Rifleman and Driver. He deployed with 3 PPCLI on Op PALLADIUM in 2000.

During his tenure with A Company, Pte Green supported training at the Land Force Western Training Centre on two occasions as a member of a demonstration section and always sought to improve upon his soldiering skills through courses and training.

Sdt Richard Anthony Green, 21 ans

Pte Nathan Lloyd Smith, 26

Private Nathan Lloyd Smith was born in Halifax, N.S., June 28, 1975 and resided in Porter's Lake, N.S. After graduating from Eastern Shore District High School in 1993, he held a number of jobs in Halifax County before attending Seneca College and graduating with high honours in Underwater Skills in 1997. Pte Smith attended the University of Calgary for one semester during the fall of 1997, and then moved to Victoria to enroll in the CF Reserves in March 1998.

After completing Reserve basic Training in Wainwright during the summer of 1998, Pte Smith transferred to the Regular Force in September 1998.

He completed Battle School and was posted to 3 PPCLI in May 1999, where he served as a Rifleman. He deployed with 3 PPCLI on Op PALLADIUM in 2000.

Pte Smith excelled in the various courses that he attended during his tenure in B Company.

After completing the Basic Parachutist Course in 2001, he was transferred to A Company, where he continued to serve the Regiment well.

Sdt Nathan Lloyd Smith, 26 ans

Le soldat Nathan Lloyd Smith est né à Halifax, en N.-É.;, le 28 juin 1975 et a résid;é à Porter's Lake, dans la même; province. Four soldiers killed in Afghanistan

The Prime Minister, the Defence Minister, the CDS, the CLS and Canadians across the country expressed deep sadness at the deaths. They praised the courage and commitment of the dead and injured and sent condolences to both grieving families and the soldiers' military family, the PPCLI.

The CF National Investigation Service is investigating the incident. A Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been convened and will be lead by General (Ret) Maurice Baril. The US military will conduct a parallel investigation and have promised full co-operation.

"It; (the BOI) will be thorough, conducted as quickly as possible and the families will be kept informed as this process moves forward," said Defence Minister, Art Eggleton.

"Ultimately;, these men knew better than any of us the risks that they would be facing, yet they accepted them, like all members of the CF, with courage, bravery and conviction," the Minister told a news conference.

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien; told the Commons that the campaign against terrorism is the "great; global struggle for justice in the 21st century."

"As; in all conflicts of the past, Canada has been on the front lines," he told MPs. "The; Canadian Forces have set themselves apart with their valour, daring and skill."

The 3 PPCLI Battle Group, with a total strength of 850 members, deployed to Afghanistan in early February as part of Operation APOLLO. They have been serving alongside US Army troops in operations to provide security and to find and defeat hard-core Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters who have fled to the mountains and countryside since losing control of Afghanistan.

Lieutenant-Colonel Pat Stogran, the battle group commander in Afghanistan, expressed heartfelt condolences to families and friends of the soldiers who perished on behalf of all members of the PPCLI Battle Group. "Words; can not express the profound sense of loss and grief we share with you," he said.

"Paratroopers; are a special breed of soldiers, and these young men were amongst the finest, bravest paratroops I have ever soldiered with. They have sacrificed their lives in the name of Canada, protecting our way of life from the scourge of terrorism. They will not be forgotten," he said.

"In; the wake of this terrible loss, the 3 PPCLI Battle Group will remain steadfast in our mission. Our spirit is not shaken, our resolve unwavering."

Six of the wounded were airlifted to the US military medical facilities at Ramstein, Germany. Their plane was met by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, her consort and Vice-Admiral James King, the senior CF representative to NATO. Two of the injured soldiers remained in Kandahar for treatment and will continue to serve with the battle group.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Ray Henault, had visited the battle group in-theatre about ten days before the incident. He said the soldiers are a very close-knit group which is proud of its mission in Afghanistan. "Indeed;, the immediate response of the battle group to this tragedy has been outstanding," the CDS told a news conference. "Their; professionalism has been unparalleled. Every soldier in that theatre of operations is a credit to the Canadian Forces and certainly a symbol of the strength of this country."

A commemorative ceremony to honour those who died will be held in Edmonton on April 28.

These four deaths bring the total to 115 soldiers who have died while serving on operational missions since the Korean War ended.

Le premier ministre, le ministre de la Défense; nationale, le CEMD, le CEMAT et les Canadiens à la grandeur du pays ont exprimé leur profonde tristesse en apprenant la nouvelle. Ils ont loué le courage et le dévouement; des morts et des blessés; et transmis leurs condoléances; aux familles éprouv;ées; ainsi qu'à la famille militaire des soldats, le PPCLI.

Le Service national des enquêtes; des Forces canadiennes a entamé une enquête; sur la tragédie.; Une commission d'enquête; a ét;é créée; et sera présid;ée; par le gén;éral; (ret) Maurice Baril. Les forces armées; américaines; mèneront; une enquête; parallèle; et ont promis d'apporter leur entière; collaboration.

« L'enquête; sera approfondie et rapide, et les familles seront tenues au courant de son évolution; », a affirmé  
M. « Comme dans tous les autres conflits où il a fallu combattre pour cette cause, le Canada est aux premières; lignes », a-t-il dit aux déput;és.; « Les Forces canadiennes se sont distinguées; par leur vaillance, leur audace et leur compétence; ».;

Le Groupement tactique du 3 PPCLI, dont l'effectif totalise 850 membres, a ét;é déploy;é en Afghanistan au début; de février; dans le cadre de l'opération; Apollo. « Les parachutistes sont des soldats exceptionnels, et ces jeunes hommes comptaient parmi les meilleurs et les plus courageux que j'ai jamais côtoy;és.; Ils ont sacrifié leur vie pour le Canada pour protéger; notre mode de vie contre le fléau; du terrorisme. Ils ne seront pas oubliés; », a-t-il affirmé.;

« Au lendemain de cette terrible tragédie;, le Groupement tactique du 3 PPCLI demeure résolu; à accomplir sa mission. Son moral et sa détermination; sont inébranlables; », a conclu le lcol Stogran.

Le chef d'état-major; de la Défense; (CEMD), le gén;éral; Ray Henault, avait rendu visite au groupement tactique au théâtre; d'opérations; une dizaine de jours avant la tragédie.; Il a déclar;é que ces soldats formaient un groupe très; uni, fier de sa mission en Afghanistan. « En effet, la réaction; immédiate; des membres du groupement tactique a ét;é remarquable », a affirmé le CEMD au cours d'une conférence; de presse. « Ils font preuve d'un profession- nalisme sans égal.; Chaque soldat qui se trouve dans ce théâtre; d'opérations; fait honneur aux Forces canadiennes et symbolise de manière; certaine la force de notre pays. »

Une cér;émonie; aura lieu à Edmonton le 28 avril en l'honneur des soldats qui ont péri.;

Ces quatre déc;ès; portent à 115 le nombre total de soldats qui ont péri; lors de missions opérationnelles; depuis la fin de la guerre de Corée.;
