The helicopter and crew, from 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, 12 Wing Shearwater, were aboard the frigate HMCS Montréal, when the rescue occurred. It was the ships last day on patrol before heading home after seven months at sea. The call for help came from a US Navy troop transport. A sailor on board had suffered an apparent heart attack and had to be evacuated ashore. Technicians readied the helicopter and aircrew planned the flight as Montréal closed in on the American ship at high speed. The rescue crew was airborne in minutes. The deck was jammed with trucks and other gear so we couldnt land, said pilot, Major Colin Murray. To hover we had to dump fuel to lighten the aircraft, added co-pilot Captain Bob Michael. The temperature was in the high thirties. Capt Duncan Rand, navigator and Master Corporal Elaine Careen, Montréals medic were hoisted down to the American ships deck to prepare the patient for transport. Warrant Officer John Nickerson, hoist operator, lifted the stretcher-bound patient into the helicopter. The patient was then flown ashore where he was transferred to hospital. It was less than two hours from the time the call for help went out. This was the second rescue from a US Navy ship for the aircrew. On the night of March 1, they evacuated a sailor with a dislocated shoulder from a US destroyer. Only a few hours later, HMCS Montréal departed the Gulf region to begin her 7 000 mile, 11 265 kilometre passage home. She is expected to arrive in Halifax on April 25. Capt Michael, 423 Sqn, is deployed with HMCS Montréal HELAIRDET. Just like the real thing8 WING TRENTON Colonel Dave Higgins, wing commander, recently had the opportunity to fly aboard the CC-130 Hercules simulator at 426 Transport Training Squadron in Trenton. Charged with the responsibility of training aircrew and technical support personnel for employment on the Hercules and Polaris Aircraft, 426 (T) Trg Sqn carries out some 35 different courses every year. It graduates approximately 900 personnel annually. In 1995, the school underwent extensive renovations, allowing the majority of squadron members to work in one building. The acquisition of state-of-the-art computerized training aids have made it an extremely well-equipped training facility. The mandate to train aircrew and technicians also provides extensive opportunities for the squadron to participate in many current theatres of operation around the world. In the Spring of 2000, the squadron completed an upgrade to the flight simulator. The changes included a new motion base, new visual system and upgraded avionics equipment.
