Volume 1 - Volume 2 - Volume 3 - Volume 4 - Volume 5 - Volume 6 - Volume 7 - Volume 8 - Volume 9 Air Force, Maple Leaf, 07 May 2003, Vol. 6 No. 17 Force aérienne, La feuille d'érable, Le 07 mai 2003, vol. 6 no. 17 "The most moving event of our time here"Canadian Denise Arsenault works for the RCMP at the Canadian Embassy in the Netherlands. She and her husband, Sgt David Arsenault, assistant to the Canadian Defence Attaché, attended the monument unveiling and burial ceremony in Wilnis. Ms. Arsenault has these thoughts on what the experience has meant to her and her husband. For this small town about 20 minutes southeast of Amsterdam, these brave soulsthe lost Canadian airmen who protected them even until their deaths, by avoiding their town when they crashedhas taken on almost mythical status here, and certainly hero status. The people in this village are still openly grateful to Canadians and it was evident throughout both ceremonies. Last November, I attended the funeral service for the airmen. The thick fog outside the church, the roosters crowing throughout the village and the hundreds of members of the community gathered outside, really made us feel like we were experiencing something very special, even historic. After the service, the caskets were marched to the cemetery behind the church. The people from the church, then the town people followed. Along the way, 100 Dutch schoolchildren lined the route, and it was clear to everyone that these children knew full well the history and the sentiment of the past and this day. The graveside service was so moving. The Dutch Air Force band played and I think they were the best I've heard. They played "The Last Post" and rouse and again, it was the best we've ever heard. The firing party of 12 shot off three volleys, and the fly-past of the Royal Netherlands Air Force was in keeping with full protocol, and its impact on the crowd was deeply felt. Out of all of this, the most special part of the day for me was meeting one of the eyewitnesses to the crash. This man, who was 16 at the time, was working the night shift at a local factory and saw the plane come down. He cried several times that dayas we all didand everyone was so interested in this man. Understandably. His whole life was identified with this experience, and it was closure for him, and many others. The efforts of the community of Wilnis to honour these three fallen Canadian airmen has been incredible and terribly humbling. For many years they have felt a certain guardianship, respect and gratitude to these three airmen and it is rewarding to see that their efforts are being recounted at home in Canada. The people in this village are still openly grateful to Canadians and it was evident throughout the burial in November and again when the memorial was unveiled. Attending these events in Wilnis has been the most moving experience of our time here. We are truly fortunate. Remembering fallen airmen in the NetherlandsBy Col Mike Whitty The small town of Wilnis, the Netherlands, recently unveiled a special monument, honouring three Canadian airmen who were killed when their aircraft was shot down in May 1943, on their return from an air raid over Dortmund. The aircraft and the remains of the three airmen were recovered only last year, and were interred in a service at the end of November 2002. The monument was erected by the municipality of De Ronde Venen, of which Wilnis is a part. The formal part of the event commenced with a presentation given by Wilnis Mayor, Marianne Burgman, and a local historian Hans Onderwater, on the Canadian involvement in the air war over the Netherlands. The presentation was followed by a commemorative service in the cemetery officiated by CF and Dutch military padres. The service concluded with flowers being laid on the graves of Warrant Officer Moulton, Flight Sergeant White and Flight Sgt Thibaudeau. Following the service at a location adjacent to the cemetery, the monumentwhich was covered by an unused parachute recovered from the aircraftwas unveiled with the help of several dignitaries and local school children. During the Canadian Ambassador's remarks, he thanked the community and all Dutch people for their continuing expression of gratitude to Canada and Canadians. The monument is of simple yet stunning design and will become the focus of annual "Remembrance Day" ceremonies held in Wilnis on May 4. Although specifically dedicated to the aircrew of Wellington Bomber HE 727, the monument will be a lasting tribute to all the young Canadians who gave their lives for the liberation of the Netherlands. Col Whitty is the Canadian Defence Attaché in the Netherlands. He and Sgt David Arsenault assisted in organizing the burial and unveiling. Huge Pacific military exercise lures Auroras to GuamBy Capt Jeff Manney CFB COMOX A Comox-based Aurora patrol aircraft and a second from Greenwood, N.S. landed on the South Pacific island of Guam, for two weeks of intensive training with US and Australian forces. The 9 000 kilometre journey was part of Exercise TANDEM THRUST, the Pacifics largest maritime military exercise of 2003. Thirty members of 19 Wing Comox and another 20 from 14 Wing Greenwood aircrew, technicians and headquarters staff join a huge naval flotilla conducting advanced training in operations ranging from peace to simulated maritime warfare. "The aim of our training is to make us ready to provide the Government of Canada with combat-ready crews able to deploy anywhere in the world," says Detachment Commander, Major Alistair Mackay. "TANDEM THRUST will give us a chance to confirm we can do just that." The pair of Auroras joined a force of at least eight surface ships, four submarines, several unmanned spy planes and an American aircraft carrier. Australian and American P-3 Orions, patrol aircraft similar to the Aurora, also participated, as did American fighter and bomber aircraft. A Comox-based pilot monitored the exercise aboard the command and control ship USS Blue Ridge. The island of Guam is located in the Northern Mariana Islands chain, 2 500 kilometres southeast of Tokyo. Despite the enormous distance, Maj Mackay said the trip to the tropical locale was essential if Canadas Aurora crews are to continue their work on multinational operations. "Our ongoing effort on Operation APOLLO is a perfect example of why we must always be prepared," Maj Mackay says, referring to Canadas commitment to the war on terrorism. "(Op) APOLLO crews will need to be replaced with fresh ones already proficient in working with other nations. They cant go in cold." TANDEM THRUST also gave Aurora crews valuable training in hunting down submarines. Finding the elusive underwater threat remains one of the aircrafts primary roles, but with Canadas new submarines not yet operational, training opportunities are few and far between. As more countries purchase cheap diesel-electric subs, Maj Mackay says the need to remain proficient has never been greater. "A new diesel sub provides, at a modest cost, all the capabilities of a nuclear sub, and theyre proliferating at an alarming rate," said Maj Mackay. "On TANDEM THRUST well be seeing a number of subs, and that kind of exposure is invaluable if were to keep our skills sharp." Ex TANDEM THRUST ended May 5. |
