CF well represented at2004 Memorial Cup

The Canadian Forces were a significant and symbolic presence during the 2004 Memorial Cup held in Kelowna, B.C. last month.

On opening day the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific marched at the head of the Welcoming Parade, followed by a marching contingent from The British Columbia Dragoons (BCD) and Rocky Mountain Rangers Regiments from Kelowna/Vernon and Kamloops respectively. Overhead a CP-140 Aurora from 407 Maritime Patrol Squadron, flying from 19 Wing Comox, added an Air Force presence to the march past and completed the tri-service character of the parade to the approval of the public viewing the event. Included in the parade were recruiting vehicles and two vintage Second World War jeeps carrying veterans in honour of the upcoming 60th anniversary of D-Day.

The Naden Band also played at the official opening ceremonies of the Okanagan Military Museum’s “Drafted! – Hockey in the Canadian Forces” and Hockey Hall of Fame displays and at an outdoor public concert. Later the band was joined by a colour party from BCD for the opening game ceremonies at the Prospera Place arena. The BCD colour party participated in starting ceremonies throughout the eight game series and were on hand for the presentation of the Memorial Cup to this year’s champions, the Kelowna Rockets, amid the applause of the over 6 000 spectators in the arena.

This was the 86th Memorial Cup event, the first being held in 1919 with the University of Toronto Schools team in a contest with the Regina Pats, named after the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry regiment. The Toronto team won the competition, held at the Toronto Arena Gardens, but not before a game delay of an hour to allow the crowds to welcome a regiment returning from overseas. The trophy was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association as a memorial of the thousands of Canadians who lost their lives during the First World War.

La présence des Forces canadiennes au tournoi de la Coupe Memorial 2004, tenu à Kelowna (C.-B.) le mois dernier, était à la fois forte et symbolique.

Le premier jour du tournoi, la Musique Naden des Forces maritimes du Pacifique était à la tête du défilé d’accueil, suivie d’un contingent formé de membres des régiments du British Columbia Dragoons (BCD) et du Rocky Mountain Rangers de Kelowna-Vernon et de Kamloops respectivement. Dans le ciel, un CP-140 Aurora du 407e Escadron de patrouille maritime de la 19e Escadre Comox représentait la Force aérienne et venait compléter le défilé composé des trois armées, à la grande joie des spectateurs. Des véhicules de recrutement et deux jeeps antiques de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale transportant des anciens combattants ont également pris part au défilé en l’honneur du 60e anniversaire du jour J qui sera célébré prochainement.

La Musique Naden a aussi joué lors d’un concert en plein air pour le public et de la cérémonie d’ouverture officielle de l’exposition « Drafted! – Hockey in the Canadian Forces » et de celle du Temple de la renommée du hockey au Musée militaire de l’Okanagan. Plus tard, une garde de drapeau du BCD s’est jointe à la musique pour la cérémonie d’ouverture à l’aréna Prospera Place. La garde de drapeau a participé à la cérémonie précédant chacune des huit parties des séries ainsi qu’à celle à laquelle on a présenté la Coupe Memorial aux champions de 2004, soit les Kelowna Rockets, devant plus de 6 000 spectateurs enjoués dans l’aréna.

Il s’agit du 86e tournoi de la Coupe Memorial, le premier ayant eu lieu en 1919 quand l’équipe de la University of Toronto Schools a affronté l’équipe des Regina Pats nommé en l’honneur du régiment Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. L’équipe de Toronto a remporté la partie organisée au Toronto Arena Gardens, qui a été reportée d’une heure afin de permettre à la foule d’accueillir un régiment revenant de sa mission outre-mer. Le trophée est un don de la Ontario Hockey Association en souvenir de ceux qui ont perdu la vie durant la Première Guerre mondiale.
