Lillehammer A.O.C. C.O.A./ LETHALWEAPONAU SOMMETDE LA FORMEThe CF's only athlete at the Nagano Olympics was biathalete Steve Cyr, a corporal from 1R22eR, CFB Valcartier. He competed in both the 12.5-km sprint and the 20-km individual events. Steve called our D-News office from Nagano, right after his last race. We were stoked! Although he was disappointed with his 48th place finish in the sprint, we weren't. He finished just 3 min and 24 sec behind the gold- medal time. Had it not been for the poor weather and his three misses on his first set of targets, he could have finished with a career best. "It was not great. Although my skiing was good, I missed three shots after the first lap in the sprint, so I had to ski an extra 450 metres." The scheduled race was postponed a day due to above-zero temperatures and rain. When it finally took place, the conditions weren't much better. "We basically raced in slush. That's a disadvantage for me. I'm much more effective when the track is hard and the weather is cold." Steve was competing in his third Olympics and was a long shot for a podium in a sport dominated by Nordic and European countries. "My goal last year had been to qualify for the 1998 Olympics; I was pleased to have been one of the two Canadians to qualify. Now I am looking forward to the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah." » Image |
