HÔTEL; POUR ANIMAUX DE COMPAGNIE

Cat nip and dog biscuits aren't yet on room service menus at hotels across Canada, but many do have the welcome mat out for pets and their owners. If you need to locate pet-friendly hotels when you're moving or on vacation, look no further than the local Holiday Inn, Days Inn or Canadian Pacific Hotels. However, these chains don't have one national standard - some do and some don't accept pets - so call ahead to check out a hotel's pet policy.

No elephants allowed. The key word with pets is 'small' - meaning dogs and cats. Some hotels allow birds and other types of pets, like the Days Inn Trenton - located only five km from the base, it's a popular place for military families. Manager Pamela O'Carroll reports they've never checked in a lizard but if they did, "that would be ok". Guests with pets are accommodated in one wing of the hotel and are surrounded by lots of green space for exercise.

Rules! Rules! Rules! It's essential to inquire about the hotel's pet policy when making reservations. Most hotels require your cat or dog to be house trained and caged. Many ask you never to leave your furry friend alone in your room. If your pet does any major damage you may be required  
to pay for the repairs.

Curiosity killed the cat. A hotel is full of hazards for a wandering pet! Prevent your kitty or pooch from escaping the confines of your room by bringing their cage, notifying management when you leave them unattended, and hanging a "Do; Not Disturb" sign on the door. On the lighter side, the Executive Housekeeper at Crowne Plaza in Winnipeg says petguests can be amusing - dogs often try hard to dis- tract housekeepers from work in favour of play and cats have been known to follow their new friends around while they're doing their rounds!

Certains hôtels; acceptent aussi les oiseaux ou d'autres types d'animaux de compagnie, comme le Days Inn Trenton, situé à 5 km seulement de la base, un hébergement; populaire pour les familles de militaires. La directrice, Pamela O'Carroll, mentionne que l'hôtel; n'a jamais eu de réservation; pour un lézard;, mais que si tel était; le cas, « pourquoi pas! ».; Les invités; et leurs animaux de compagnie sont logés; dans une aile de l'hôtel; entourée; d'espaces verts permettant l'exercice.

Les règlements;, toujours les règlements;! Il est essentiel de s'informer de la politique de l'hôtel; au moment des réservations.; La plupart des hôtels; exigent que votre chat ou votre chien soit dressé et gardé en cage. Beaucoup demandent que vous ne laissiez jamais votre ami poilu seul dans la chambre. Si votre animal de compagnie cause un dommage important, vous pour- riez devoir payer la note.

La curiosité est toujours punie. Un hôtel; est rempli de dangers pour un animal familier errant. Empêchez; votre minou ou votre pitou de se sauver de la chambre en le laissant en cage, en prévenant; la direction lorsque vous partez et laissez l'animal sans surveillance et en accrochant l'avis « Ne pas

déranger; » à la porte. La gérante; du personnel d'entretien du Crowne Plaza à Winnipeg déclare; que les animaux familiers peuvent toutefois être; amusants, les chiens veulent jouer et empêchent; les employés; de travailler et les chats suivent leurs nouveaux amis pendant qu'ils effectuent leur tournée;!

Aretha Franklin-A Rose Is Still A Rose (Arista/BMG) : A fine return for the Queen of Soul. Trip-hop bed tracks on which Aretha's buttery-smooth voice flows.

Dave Matthews Band-Before These Crowded Streets (RCA/BMG) : Musicians' musicians deliver their most potent recording yet. Great ensemble work. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant-Walking Into Clarksdale (Atlantic/Warner). Led Zeppelin rock gods deliver an interesting look back to their glory days. Zep-style mysticism masks the fact that Plant's voice has not aged well, and that Page's fretwork tends to meander. Still, it's a trip to listen to these two come full circle.  
The Presidents of The United States of America-Pure Frosting (Sony): B-sides, live tracks and other curio from a brilliant, very twisted band.

Bonnie Raitt - Fundamental (Capitol/EMI) : A typical Bonnie Raitt album; warm, down-to-earth and honest. Enough said. Semisonic-Feeling Strangely Fine (MCA/Universal) : A great band delivers great pop. Worthy of comparisons to Rubber Soul-era Beatles and The Wallflowers.

The Mavericks-Trampoline(MCA Nashville/Universal) : Brilliant hybrid of C&W;, Pop and Latin styles which features groovy trumpet lines à la Herb Alpert.

Jo Dee Messina-I'm Alright (Curb EMI) : Commercially-crafted "New Country", which presents nothing that hasn't been done better by someone else before.

The Maple Leaf / La Feuille d'érable;

Due to its rich military heritage, Kingston, Ont. was chosen as the site of Canada's first military college, which opened on June 1, 1876. Military presence in Kingston dates back to 1789 when a naval depot was established. During the War of 1812, this depot became the largest military base in Upper Canada.

The College's first buildings included some which were erected in the old naval dockyard on Point Frederick, east of Kingston. Among them was one known as the "Stone Frigate," which had been built to store naval masts, spars, sails and cordage from warships laid up following the War of 1812. This venerable structure has been in continuous use as a dormitory since the College opened, and was bestowed with the right to "Royal" by Queen Victoria, two years later. The first academic facility was completed in 1878 and is named the Mackenzie Building in honour of Canada's Prime Minister  
of the day, Alexander Mackenzie, who is considered the founder of the College. The building, surrounded by numerous modern structures, continues to be used as the College's administrative build  
ing today.

The Royal Military College of  
Canada Degrees Act passed by the 25th Ontario Legislature and given Royal Assent on March 26, 1959 empowers the College to confer degrees and honorary degrees in Arts, Science and Engineering. RMC became institutionally bilingual in the mid-1970s and achieved co-educational status beginning in 1980.

Between 1948 and 1995, RMC shared with Royal Roads Military College, in Victoria, and the Collège; militaire royal de Saint- Jean (starting in 1952), the responsibility of educating officer cadets. In 1995, the latter two institutions closed. The curriculum was restructured to integrate programs affected by the closings, and all RMC options in Arts, Science and Engineering became available in English and French. The College has had a bilingual name since - Royal Military College of Canada and Collège; militaire royal du Canada.

Compte tenu de son riche passé militaire, c'est Kingston (Ont.) qui est choisi comme emplacement du futur collège; qui ouvre ses portes le 1^er juin 1876. La présence; militaire à Kingston remonte en effet à 1789, avec l'établissement; d'un dép;ôt; naval. Pendant la guerre de 1812, ce dép;ôt; devient la base militaire la plus importante du Haut-Canada.

Certains des premiers bâtiments; du collège; ont ét;é érig;és; sur l'ancien chantier naval de la pointe Frederick, à l'est de Kingston. Le premier bâtiment; d'enseignement, dont la construction a ét;é terminée; en 1878, porte le nom d'édifice; Mackenzie, en l'honneur du premier ministre du Canada de l'époque; qui est considér;é comme le fondateur du collège.; Aujourd'hui, il est le centre administratif de l'établissement; qui compte de nombreux édifices; modernes.

Le Royal Military College of
