CF SOCCER TEAM WORLD CHAMPS CHAMPIONS AMATEURS DU BALLON ROND

HENGELO, NETHERLANDS - "It was a Cinderella story. We were never expected to win, but we played with heart and emotion - and we won. I still can't believe it." The words of CF soccer team captain, Captain John Kalhous, describe his team's gold-medal performance at the Amateur World Cup of soccer, held in May.

This prestigious tournament, which drew 60 teams from 20 countries, has never before in its 28-year history been won by a non-European nation. The team of 23 from the rebuilt CF national soccer team, the only military team in the tournament, went undefeated - winning seven games and tying three - in an condensed two-day tournament. "We were technically outskilled by the majority of the teams," continued Capt Kalhous. "We kept our game simple, played to our strengths and otherwise attribute this proud victory to good old Canadian grit, hard work and determination."

On the first day of the tournament, Team Canada defeated teams from the U.S., Holland, Britain and the Czech Republic. After winning the final game of the round robin, the team faced its toughest competitor of the tournament in the semi-finals - a touring club of South American descent based in Amsterdam. The team's hopes of winning seemed dashed when, with about eight minutes remaining in the game, the Jailhouse Boys scored a beautiful goal.

"In eight minutes of frantic, desperate soccer, we threw everything at them. It worked. We forced a corner kick with approximately 20 seconds remaining in the game and scored," said Capt Kalhous. In the subsequent shoot-out, the team's goalie made a fantastic save while our shooters were deadly accurate. The upset was dramatic. The finals were played an hour later by battered bodies with raised spirits, as supporters from different  
nations chanted "Go  
Canada Go." The CF  
won 2-0.

HENGELO, PAYS-BAS - « C'est une histoire de Cendrillon. Nous ne pensions jamais gagner, mais nous avons joué avec coeur - et nous avons raflé les honneurs. Je ne peux pas y croire. » Ainsi s'exprimait le capitaine de l'équipe; de soccer des FC, le capt John Kalhous, après; que son équipe; ait remporté la médaille; d'or à la Coupe du monde amateur de soccer en Hollande, en mai.

Ce prestigieux tournoi auquel ont participé 60 équipes;, en provenance de 20 pays, n'avait jamais couronné de champion non européen; en ses 28 ans d'histoire. L'équipe; nationale de soccer, composée; de 23 membres des FC - la seule équipe; militaire du tournoi - n'a pas connu la défaite.; Elle a remporté sept matchs et en a annulés; trois et ce, en deux jours seulement. « Techniquement, nous n'étions; pas à la hauteur de la majorité des équipes;, avoue le capt Kalhous. Nous avons main- tenu un jeu simple et y avons mis toutes nos énergies.; Nous attribuons cette victoire à notre cran, à notre esprit d'équipe; et à notre détermination.; »

Le premier jour du tournoi, l'équipe; canadienne a successivement défait; celles des États-Unis;, de Hollande, de Grande-Bretagne et de la République; tchèque.; Après; avoir remporté le match final du tournoi à la ronde, l'équipe; a affronté son concurrent le plus féroce; en demi-finale, une équipe; d'origine sud-américaine; basée; à Amsterdam. Les espoirs semblaient évanouis; quand, à huit minutes de la fin, l'équipe; des CF a marqué.;

« Durant ces huit dernières; minutes, nous avons mis le paquet. Alors qu'il restait 20 secondes à jouer, nous avons marqué un but dans un coup de coin », rappelle le capt Kalhous. Puis, le gardien a fait un arrêt; magnifique. L'issue a ét;é dramatique. Les finales ont eu lieu une heure plus tard. Les esprits étaient; surchauffés.; Les partisans de différentes; nations scandaient « Go Canada Go ».;

L'équipe; canadienne a remporté la finale 2 à 0.
