Communication Canada
Government On-Line (GOL) Public Report 2001

Government of Canada Primary Portals and Canadians Gateway

Communication Canada is responsible for the main public access channels to the Government of Canada:

  • Canada Site- the recently redesigned official Government of Canada Internet portal;
  • 1 800 O-Canada portal- the primary telephone access point to the Government of Canada which also provides user support services to the Canada site, Canadians and Non-Canadians gateways.

The Canada Site is designed to respond to citizen needs through three primary gateways: Canadians Gateway, Non-Canadians and Canadian Business, together providing access to more than 450 federal Web sites. Communication Canada is also responsible for the Canadians Gateway.

The Integrated GOL User Support Services project provides user support services through e-mail and telephone for the Canada site, Canadians and Non-Canadians gateways.

Benefits

  • Around-the-clock access to Government of Canada programs and services.
  • On-line consultation, electronic transactions and service delivery offered through the various channels.
  • Access to specialized clusters based on life needs including access to information, services and forms, as well as on-line service delivery and electronic transactions with different levels of government.
  • Personalized service, convenience and choice of channels depending on the nature of the service sought.

Accomplishments

  • January 2001, a new version of the Canada Site was released and the Canadians Gateway was launched. With the re-release of the Canada Site, a basic customization feature was introduced allowing users to create a page of bookmarks with links from the Canada Site. As a result, significant advances were made in making the Canada Site and Canadians Gateway accessible to all Canadians regardless of special access needs, level of education or sophistication of technology used to access the site.
  • Spring 2001, user support was enhanced through an e-mail management pilot for 1 800 O-Canada. A toll free information line was also made available to users of the Canada Site and Canadians Gateway for help in navigating the sites and/or to address any technical difficulties experienced by users.

On-line Presence

Future Directions

  • Communication Canada is committed to integrating our web, telephone and e-mail services to ensure that all Canadians have equal access to government information and services in the communication channel of their choice.
  • As GOL matures, Communication Canada will be able to embrace new technologies and respond to citizen and federal government employee feedback to widen the integration of government databases and begin to upgrade the architecture of the information systems.
