Communication Canada's Role in the Government On-Line InitiativeCommunication Canada's role in the Government On-Line (GOL) initiative is rooted in its public access programs and services that offer several ways to communicate with the Government of Canada. Communication Canada develops and manages three of the key public access channels: the Canada Site, 1 800 O-Canada and Publiservice. It also works with several other departments in support of the Service Canada program. Communication Canada has gained the expertise to help other departments meet their own GOL targets. Communication Canada shares responsibility and accountability with Human Resources Development Canada for the Services for Canadians section of the Canada Site. The Department also manages the GOL user support services . This user support team answers e-mail and telephone questions about the Canada Site, the Services for Canadians and Services for Non-Canadians portals , as well as several of the cluster sites. Communication Canada's Communications Branch also develops promotional material for these portals in cooperation with the Treasury Board Secretariat, Privy Council Office as well as federal departments and agencies to foster public awareness of information and services available on-line. In addition, Communication Canada launched the Government of Canada Publications Web site on July 2, 2002. This electronic bookstore allows users to browse and order free and priced Government of Canada publications over the Internet. Communication Canada manages the development and operation of this site. Communication Canada is also a leader for other key e-government initiatives. The Department facilitates and coordinates public opinion studies by guiding clients throughout the process to ensure their research objectives are met. Communication Canada's extensive participation in decision-making committees also highlights its leadership role in the GOL community.
