Preface
Through August 26 - September 4, 2002, participants will gather in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
The Summit provides an opportunity to reinvigorate the global commitment towards the achievement of sustainable development.
Sustainable Development: A Canadian Perspective was commissioned by the Government of Canada through the Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat, as part of Canada's preparations for the Summit. It is neither a checklist nor a report card. Rather, it involved collecting views on accomplishments and challenges from different segments of society to provide a perspective on Canada's progress towards sustainable development over the past decade. The paper highlights some of Canada's considerable successes, speaks of some of the remaining challenges and explores some of the current efforts underway to meet those challenges.
The report is the result of a broad based process that included contributions from experts both inside and outside government, as well as public input through a series of cross-Canada roundtable discussions. A draft of the report was posted on the Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat website.
The Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat gratefully acknowledges the contributions of all these participants.
