International institutions
Internationally, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 was a catalyst for the global environmental movement. The Conference provided the appropriate political support needed for the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), while fostering the creation of international institutions concerned with the environment and sustainable development. Subsequently, over 100 000 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) concerned with the protection of the environment have been created.
