During the Second World War, chemical warfare agent testing was performed at two locations: the Suffield Experimental Station, Alberta and the Chemical Warfare Laboratories, Ottawa.

On November 11, 2004 a wreath was laid at the National War Memorial in Ottawa in recognition of the chemical warfare agent testing Veterans who served at the Suffield Experimental Station, Alberta and the Chemical Warfare Laboratories, Ottawa. Chemical warfare agent test Veterans, Mr. William Tanner and Mr. Harvey Friesen participated in these National Remembrance Day Ceremonies as representatives of their fellow Veterans.

On April 24, 2005, a ceremony was held on the grounds of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa to unveil a plaque dedicated to those who served at the Chemical Warfare Laboratories. This plaque symbolizes Canada’s recognition of Veterans who volunteered to participate in chemical warfare agent tests. Their exceptional service was not acknowledged for many years, but now their story can finally be told.

On 26 August 2005, a dedication ceremony was held at the Suffield Experimental Station, Alberta to unveil the replacement Memorial Plaque that symbolizes Canada’s recognition for our Veterans who were Chemical Warfare Agent Testing Subjects during the Second World War. They were not previously acknowledged for their exceptional service for many years, but now their story can finally be told.
