ITAC and Softchoice Sponsor Conference on Canada's Competitiveness and Prosperity
February 15, 2006 - The Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity, chaired by Roger Martin (who is also the Dean of the Joseph Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto) is one of Canada's most authoritative and respected sources for insight and thought leadership on Canada's economic performance. Each year the Institute releases an annual report on key indicators contributing to Canadian competitiveness, productivity and prosperity. This year the Institute will present its report at a conference in Ottawa on March 10. ITAC and Softchoice Corporation are pleased to sponsor this conference. Many of the country's pre-eminent economists, policy makers, educators and business leaders will participate in this event. Besides Roger Martin, speakers include Andrew Sharpe of the Centre for the Study of Living Standards, Don Drummond, chief economist for TD Financial Services and Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of RIM. February 10, 2006 - The ITAC Board of Directors met on February 8 to begin the planning process for the 2006-7 program. With the Board's direction, staff will now develop a full plan for presentation and circulation to membership in April. After the meeting, the directors had an opportunity to meet and chat with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. Though it was an informal gathering, the Premier did take the time to outline some of the key priorities of his government. He noted in particular the significant investments the province is making in education. He also explained the purpose and objectives of the Ministry of Research and Innovation and saluted the important role the ICT industry plays in enabling productivity in the Ontario economy and in helping to drive a culture of innovation.

ITAC’s Pre-Budget Submission (Ontario) Calls for Incentives for ICT Adoption
February 8, 2006 - ICT Adoption incentives feature prominently in ITAC’s pre-budget submission to the Ontario Minister of Finance. The submission proposed that there are measures the province can take, particularly in ICT training, to help businesses – especially small businesses – more readily adopt ICT tools to improve their productivity. In addition, the submission calls for measures to harmonize Ontario and Federal Corporate tax and GST. Access the pre-budget submission here. CSLS Study Explains Why Canadian ICT Investment Is Less Than U.S.
Virtually no growth of labour productivity in the Canadian business sector occurred in 2003 and 2004, and the gap between American and Canadian labour productivity has grown significantly. Lagging ICT investment has been identified as a possible cause of the weak growth and the gap between the two countries. A new study by the Centre for the Study of Living Standards has identified the factors that have caused this investment gap. For the full text of the news release, please click here.
