Led by Industry Canada, the December 13–14, 2004 Sectoral Follow-Up Session on Economic Opportunities was the fifth in a series of sectoral specific sessions intended to fulfill the commitment made by Prime Minister Paul Martin at the conclusion of the April 19, 2004 Canada-Aboriginal Peoples Roundtable. An independent team of facilitators, responsible for facilitating the session, prepared this report based on the notes of the discussions.

This study was commissioned by Aboriginal Business Canada to survey Aboriginal firms that were either current or recent clients of ABC and those that were non-clients. The study drew comparisons between the characteristics and performance of these firms and, when data allowed, other firms in the general Canadian business population.

Aboriginal entrepreneurs are playing an increasingly important role in the Canadian economy. The 1996 Census shows there were more than 20 000 Indians, Métis and Inuit who where self-employed. This report provides information and data on these businesses.
