ChinaChina's Environmental MarketMarket OverviewChina’s significant economic growth is expected to remain strong with gross domestic product rising by 9.1 percent in 2005, 8.1 percent in 2006 and quadrupling by 2020. Projections show that China will become the world’s largest economy by 2025 and its population of 1.3 billion is expected to continue to increase over this period. This tremendous growth is not without its substantial implications for China’s environment and the resultant need for environmental protection infrastructure solutions, water and wastewater management, cleaner production technologies, energy efficiency solutions and technologies, pollution prevention, waste management, air pollution control technologies and Green House Gas (GHG) emission reductions. China has strengthened its environmental legislation to stem environmental deterioration and plans being drafted for its 2006-2011 five-year plan are expected to allocate spending equal to 1.5 percent of gross domestic product. These factors, along with recent reductions in trade barriers resulting from China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, offers significant opportunities for Canadian environmental technologies.
