    As in the first quarter of 2005, rising fuel prices at the pump caused consumers to spend proportionally more of their retail dollar on automotive fuels, oils and additives in the second quarter of 2005.

    Canada's retail trade industry has grown at a relatively robust pace since the turn of the millennium, even though the economy encountered a series of dampening events, according to a new study that provides an in-depth analysis of retail sales nationally and provincially between 1996 and 2004.

    Operating revenues of store retailers rose at their slowest pace in seven years following a series of negative shocks to the economy in 2003. Store retailers operating revenues rose only 3.7% from 2002.

    Retail sales advanced at the fastest rate of growth in four months in November, and nearly double the pace of the previous month. New motor vehicle sales were again a strong contributor to these gains.
