Fee Calculation Examples

The fee will be calculated as set out in section 25.1 of the Patent Rules, which reads as follows:
On requesting a copy in electronic form of a document,
a) for each request $10
b) plus, for each patent or application to which the request relates $10
c) plus, if the copy is requested on a physical medium, for each physical medium requested in addition to the first $10
d) plus, for each additional 10 megabytes or part of them exceeding 7 megabytes $10.

In other words, the fee for a request will be calculated as follows:
a) the request;
b) plus the number of patent documents to which the request relates;
c) plus the physical medium (CD-ROMs) needed or required in addition to the first one;
d) plus the total electronic size of the request; this size will be counted in 10 megabyte segments where each segment costs $10; and the last digit is rounded off if exceeding 7 megabytes.

To illustrate how the calculation will be done, four examples are shown below.

Example 1
A request for five patent documents at 5 megabytes each, stored on one CD-ROM:
for the request$10 +
number of patent documents to which the request relates$50 +
number of CD-ROMs in addition to the first one$ 0 +
size of the request by 10 megabyte segments where the last digit is rounded off if exceeding 7 megabytes$20
Total  $80

Example 2
A request for one sequence listing of 400 megabytes on one CD-ROM:
for the request$10 +
number of patent documents to which the request relates$10 +
number of CD-ROMs in addition to the first one$ 0 +
the size of the request by 10 megabyte segments where the last digit is rounded off if exceeding 7 megabytes$400
Total  $420

Example 3
A request for four patent documents having the following electronic size: 5 megabytes, 7 megabytes, 19 megabytes and 200 megabytes on two CD-ROMs:
for the request$10 +
number of patent documents to which the request relates$40 +
number of CD-ROMs in addition to the first one$10 +
the size of the request by 10 megabyte segments where the last digit is rounded off if exceeding 7 megabytes$230
Total  $290

Example 4
A request for three patent documents; wherein the first document, only the claims are asked for (2 megabytes); in the second patent document, the claims and the drawings are asked for (7 megabytes); and in the third patent document the entire document is asked for (29 megabytes). All these documents are to be on one CD-ROM:
for the request$10 +
number of patent documents to which the request relates$30 +
number of CD-ROMs in addition to the first one$ 0 +
the size of the request by 10 megabyte segments where the last digit is rounded off if exceeding 7 megabytes$40
Total  $80
