CANADIAN INDUSTRY STATISTICS
The Strategis and Business Information Services Directorate has launched data updates on the
Canadian Industry Statistics website. The new data includes the recent release of 2000 and 2001 data from the Annual Survey of Manufacturers; updated capital expenditures data; and establishment count data from the 2002 Canadian Business Patterns database.

SPECTRUM MANAGEMENT AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
All Canadians are invited, until October 17, 2003, to submit their comments to the National Antenna Tower Policy Review being conducted by David A. Townsend, Professor of Law, and his team at the University of New Brunswick, with support from the National Antenna Tower Advisory Committee. This Tower Policy Review's objective is to lead the development of new, modern procedures for placing antenna towers, which embrace community involvement and expand the economic and social benefits of wireless, broadcast and wireless broadband technologies across Canada.

ABORIGINAL BUSINESS CANADA
In September and October of 2003, Statistics Canada will be conducting the Aboriginal Entrepreneurs Survey on behalf of Industry Canada (Aboriginal Business Canada). Aboriginal entrepreneurship continues to be on the rise in Canada. According to the most recent Census, more than 30,000 Aboriginal individuals were self-employed in 2001. Since 1996, self-employment among Aboriginal people has grown by an average of eight percent per year--four times the rate for the non-Aboriginal population. The objective of the Aboriginal Entrepreneurs Survey is to obtain updated information on Aboriginal entrepreneurs and the issues surrounding Aboriginal business development. This survey is complementary to the 1996 Aboriginal Business Survey.

CANADIAN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE
The Government of Canada announced its intention to amend the Patent Act to clarify the payment of certain patent fees. These amendments are in response to recent decisions of the Federal Court Trial Division and the Federal Court of Appeal. These amendments will foster confidence in the Canadian patent system and ensure that the patent regime in Canada remains responsive and user-friendly. A strong patent system encourages innovation and helps create a positive investment climate.

PROTECTING YOURSELF AGAINST DEBIT CARD FRAUD
Canadians use debit cards millions of times a day at banking machines and point of sale terminals to access their accounts and make purchases. While the vast majority of transactions, using a card and "personal identification number" (PIN), are completed without any problems, there have been a growing number of cases of debit card fraud in recent years. Taking steps to protect your debit card and PIN will help reduce your risk of being a victim of fraud.
