The Application of Biotechnology to Industrial
Sustainability: An Overview. Industrialization, urbanization,
agriculture, fishing, aquaculture, forestry, silviculture, as well as petroleum
and mineral extraction have a profound impact on the world's environment. These
human activities not only impact the sustainability of environmental quality
but also on the quality of life. As a result, there is a growing appreciation
nationally, regionally and globally, that resource management and utilisation
need to be improved. There is also recognition that the amounts of waste and
pollution generated by human activity need to be reduced on a large scale. This
will require a reduction and, if possible, elimination of unsustainable
patterns of production and consumption. As a result, emphasis on developing
industrial sustainability is growing.
