Retail is a widely watched indicator of consumer spending and the health and direction of the domestic economy.
  RCC's research shows that through the first ten months of 2005, retailers enjoyed solid, steady sales growth conditions. They experienced growth in all regions of Canada, although, in contrast to 2004, the pattern was more diverse in 2005.

Christmas Eve is a mere 24 hours away and Chip Wilson is walking from his office in downtown Vancouver toward the Lululemon Athletica store on Robson Street, one of 33 outlets in the yoga-inspired apparel chain he founded in 1998.Wilson has decided he'll spend a few hours working alongside sales associates on one of the busiest days in the retail calendar. It's something he does weekly, even while running one of Canada's hottest specialty chain retailers.

Retailers Anticipate Another Solid Year

Retailers expect to make it three years in a row. Respondents report that they anticipate another year of steady, solid growth, only slightly softer than 2005. However, merchants do not expect the 2006 holiday season to show the same significant improvement over the full-year results that they saw last year. Respondents report 2005 was a solid year, with sales, margins, and inventories all generally showing improvements.
