Promoting Corporate Stewardship

Industry Canada's Environmental Affairs Branch (EAB) promotes and encourages the adoption of good corporate stewardship initiatives throughout Canadian industries. This is one of the key components of Industry Canada's Sustainable Development Strategy.

Sustainable development at a firm level leads to high economic growth, improved environmental protection and increased social responsibility. EAB recognizes the importance of credible, well-designed voluntary initiatives in preventing pollution, conserving resources and contributing to the competitive advantage of Canadian firms.

Moving beyond regulation through proactive environmental management and voluntary initiatives helps position industry to effectively deal with the market realities imposed by sustainable development imperatives.

EAB promotes corporate stewardship by:

  • providing information through publications, workshops and dialogue on the benefits and drivers for adopting good corporate stewardship initiatives;
  • providing information on domestic and international initiatives currently underway;
  • promoting within government an optimum public policy mix, including tools such as voluntary industry initiatives, economic instruments and a sound regulatory framework; and
  • contributing to international discussions and multi-stakeholder dialogues related to voluntary initiatives.
