![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Industry Canada and Industry PortfolioIndustry Canada's portfolio partners (i.e. those agencies that are responsible to the Minister of Industry) also recognize and use CSR as an overaching concept with respect to their external and internal operations and most deal with the CSR elements in a focussed way. For example, the Business Development Bank of Canada supports CSR through policies on corporate governance, conflict of interest and ethics. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) indicates that they do fund research on issues relevant to social corporate responsibility and Statistics Canada gathers corporate data such as on expenditures related to the environment. The National Research Council provides training and work assignments for recent university graduates to improve their experience for the benefit of industry as well as the public sector. ACOA also supports features of CSR in their initiatives (e.g. Business Development Program) and intheir operations on such fronts as skill development and training. Western Economic Diversification uses its programs and funds to work in partnership to enhance activities in communities (e.g. Aboriginal Strategy, Wormen's Enterprise Initiative). All three regional agencies have sustainable development strategies and have commitments to encourage the improvement of environmental and social performance within industry in their respective regions. Further, all three regional agencies as well as FedNor administer the Community Futures Program across Canada to advance community economic development at the local level.
