BASIC DESCRIPTION:

The Natural Gas Technology Centre (NGTC) is a not-for-profit corporation which was established October 1, 1991. Its mandate is to promote the use of natural gas via gas technology research and development. The Centre has a 15-member staff made up primarily of energy engineers and specialized technicians.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Canadian companies and organizations involved in the commercial, institutional, and industrial use of natural gas, as gas distributors, equipment manufacturers, major consumers of natural gas, universities, and governments.

FULL DESCRIPTION:

Objectives:

  • Through gas research and development, to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Canadian industry by facilitating the dissemination, acquisition, and use of advanced technologies
  • To develop a manufacturing infrastructure for Canadian gas technologies
  • To provide training on existing technologies and on new gas technologies
  • To help clean up the environment

Areas of activity:

  • Research and development on the use of natural gas as an energy source and as a raw material
  • Gas technologies

Services:

On behalf of its partners, its members and the private sector, the Centre performs the following activities:

  • Applied research and development in areas such as combustion, heating, industrial processes, use of natural gas as a raw material, electrical power generation, etc.
  • Demonstration of new technologies, including their adaptation to Canadian standards
  • Transfer of foreign technologies to Canada
  • Provision of training to engineering and architectural firms as well as to users of new technologies
  • Documentation and information on new technologies
  • Preparation of seminars and colloquia on gas technologies

Major Achievements:

  • Development of a low-power oxy-gas burner
  • Development of a new type of connector for flexible pipe
  • Major achievement in the natural gas storage project (Adsorption Process). This discovery has been patented. Partners in this project are UQTR, SOQUIP and CANMET.
  • Development of a natural gas conversion kit for city buses

Relationship and link with other scientific institutions:

The Centre has developed relations with several institutions and organizations involved in natural gas research and development.
Chief among these are:

  • The Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR)
  • Concordia University
  • The Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada (PAPRICAN)
  • The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET)
  • The Canadian Gas Research Institute (CGRI)
  • The Gas Research Institute (GRI)

The Centre also maintains international contacts with Gaz de France, Osaka Gas, and British Gas, in order to make their technologies available to Canada.
