B.C. COMPANY VIOLATES MEAT INSPECTION ACT (Revised)On January 11, 2006, Premium Brands Inc., which at the time of the offence in May 2003 was doing business as Fletcher's Fine Foods, entered guilty pleas in provincial court in Vancouver, British Columbia for two counts of violating the Meat Inspection Regulations. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigated Premium Brands Inc. for improperly selling inedible sausages for animal food. Premium Brands Inc. was fined $3,000 for failing to have the sausages inspected by an official veterinarian to ensure that the product would not pose a health risk to animals and failing to properly identify the sausages as animal food. The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Meat Inspection Act and its regulations.
