Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee (CAHCC)

The Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee (CAHCC) has been meeting annually for more than 25 years to discuss and consult on a broad range of animal health issues. This meeting is hosted by the Animal Health and Production Division and the Animal Disease Surveillance Unit of the Animal Products Directorate.

The CAHCC forum provides for communication, consultation and co-ordination between the CFIA, its provincial partners, and regulated animal industries, and provides for the review, development and implementation of animal health policies and programs with the goal of promoting the long-term sustainability of Canada's animal industries.

The CAHCC is made up of national industry representatives, federal-provincial animal health authorities, national animal health and welfare organizations, veterinary college deans, and invited guests such as the United States Department of Agriculture and the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación de México. Three distinct meetings take place: the Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee meeting, the Expert Committee on Animal Health meeting, and the Federal-Provincial Animal Health meeting. A number of sub-committees and working groups may also meet separately to discuss specific policy and animal health related issues.

Each year the membership is invited to nominate recipients for two awards that are presented at the annual meetings. The Carl Block Award is given to individuals in recognition of their contribution to the national Animal Health Program, and the Kenneth Wells Award is given to individuals in government and academia in recognition of their contribution to policies, implementation and delivery of Canada’s national Animal Health Program.
