CFIA
has established a regulated area in parts of Toronto and Vaughan to prevent the
spread of the Asian Long-Horned Beetle. The Asian Long-horned Beetle
Infested Place Order prohibits the movement of any tree materials (
including nursery stock, trees, leaves, logs, lumber, wood, wood chips and bark
chips from certain deciduous trees identified as hosts of the ALHB and firewood of all species) out of or
through the regulated area unless authorized by a Movement Certificate issued
by the CFIA.
While the insect presents no threat to public health, the beetle poses a
significant risk to Canadas trees and forests. The ALHB has no natural controls in North
America that would prevent its spread.
The CFIA is implementing an aggressive
campaign to control and eradicate this unwanted pest with the full cooperation
of the City of Vaughan, the City of Toronto and other federal, provincial and
municipal partners.
If you believe that you may have found this beetle, please
contact a local CFIA office or call
1-800-442-2342. There are several native Canadian insects (
White spotted Sawyer beetle,
Western Conifer Seed Bug, Banded Alder Beetle) which look similar to the
Asian Longhorned Beetle.
