A Negotiation Competition
Not all lawyers litigate, but ALL lawyers negotiate. Negotiation competitions promote greater interest in negotiation among law students, provide a means for students to practice and improve their negotiating skills, and give them an opportunity to receive valuable feedback from lawyers and other professionals experienced in negotiation who act as judges.
The University of Ottawa Faculty of Common Law, with sponsorship of the law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, conducts an annual competition to select a team to compete in the American Bar Association (ABA) Law Student Division Negotiation Competition. Similar local competitions are held by law faculties in Alberta and British Columbia. Winners of the regional competitions advance to the ABA Law Student Division National Competition and the winners of that are invited to attend the International Negotiation Competition where they compete with students from around the world.
What Does it Take to Win?
On the evening of Thursday March 9th, 2006, Robson Hall will conduct its first negotiation competition based on the University of Ottawa model. Teams of two second and third year students will negotiate the resolution of a dispute with an opposing team before a panel of three judges. All teams will negotiate concurrently in rooms throughout Robson Hall.

Pitblado Scholars Recognized at Annual Reception
 he Faculty of Law recognized the 2005 Pitblado Scholars
at the 3 rd annual Robson Hall Reception in recognition of Support for Students: Achievement and Access, on Monday September 19th 2005.
The Reception was graciously attended by James and Sandra Pitblado, benefactors of the Pitblado Scholarship, as well as guests speakers, U of M President, Emõke Szathmáry and Minister of Advanced Education and Training, Diane McGifford.

The Pitblado Scholarships, named in honour of Isaac Pitblado, Q.C. and Edward Bruce Pitblado, Q.C.,
recognize exceptional scholastic achievement by students in their first and second year of study in
the Faculty of Law. These scholarships were created in 2001 through a generous donation by Sandra
and James Pitblado, with support from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative.
Isaac Pitblado
(1867 – 1964) studied and initially practised law with Sir James Aikins, founding President of the
Canadian Bar Association. He had a most distinguished career and became the principal partner in
Pitblado and Hoskin, the firm, which continues today as Pitblado LLP. From 1917 to 1924, Mr. Pitblado
served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba. He was also the founding
President of the University’s Alumni Association and President of the Canadian Bar Association.
Edward Pitblado (1896 – 1978) followed his father in law, practising with Pitblado and Hoskin for
over 50 years. A Rhodes Scholar, he earned a degree in jurisprudence from Queen’s College at the
University of Oxford. Edward Pitblado was also committed to the University of Manitoba, serving as
the President of the University’s Alumni Association and its representative on the Board of Governors.
A sportsman and lifelong conservationist, he was a member of the 1924 British Olympic hockey team.
In 1938, he arranged for the incorporation of Ducks Unlimited (Canada); following that, he served as
its Secretary for 36 years.
