Eligible Organizations

EnerGuide for Existing Buildings (EEB) (formerly the Energy Innovators Initiative) invites owners and managers of existing buildings in the commercial, institutional and other eligible sectors to join the EEB by sending a letter to the Minister. After becoming an Energy Innovator, members can also apply for Energy Retrofit Assistance (ERA) funding.

Commercial Sector (Examples)

  • Retail
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Office buildings
  • Multi-unit residential buildings*
  • Warehouses without manufacturing
  • Others

Institutional Sector (Examples)

  • School boards
  • Colleges and universities
  • Health care
  • Non-profit
  • Provincial and municipal governments
  • Others

*Multi-unit residential buildings with a common entrance that are at least four storeys high or that have a footprint greater than 600 m2 are eligible for funding.

Other Organizations (Eligible for Funding Under Certain Conditions)

  • Industrial office buildings and warehouses may be able to apply for funding under certain circumstances, but energy improvements to manufacturing facilities or industrial processes are not eligible. Industrial organizations should first join the Industrial Energy Innovators.
  • Federal Crown corporations may be able to apply for funding under certain circumstances, but Government of Canada departments cannot. Contact the Federal Buildings Initiative first for more information.

Energy management services companies, consultants, utilities and other service providers cannot join the EII or apply directly for funding on behalf of their clients, but they can work with the EII as «allies.» Non-profit organizations with members in the sectors listed above can inquire about becoming EEB partners.
