Forms and Guides for New Buildings

Steps to Apply for IBIP Funding

This page takes you through the process of applying for funding from the Industrial Building Incentive Program (IBIP) for new industrial buildings.

Please make sure you have first reviewed the basics of how IBIP funding works before proceeding with the following steps.

Steps

  1. Send a Letter of Commitment signed by the building owner's president or chief executive officer to become an Industrial Energy Innovator.
  2. Submit a completed Expression of Interest Form. After receiving this form, we will contact you to discuss eligibility of the project for IBIP.
  3. Read the IBIP Technical Guide for details on IBIP and modelling procedures.
  4. Fill out the Mandatory Requirements Checklist.
  5. Complete the On-Line Screening Tool [This link opens a new window].
  6. Submit the Technical Proposal. We will then contact you with any concerns and can then offer you preliminary approval. Building owners are also eligible for funding of up to $2,000 for assistance with preparing the technical proposal and for help with the building simulation.
  7. Use EE4 software [This link opens a new window] to simulate and assess the energy performance of your design and verify design compliance with the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB).
  8. Complete the final application package, including IBIP Performance Worksheets simulation files, drawings and appropriate documentation on the process improvements, including specifications and manufacturers' literature. During the review process, we may contact you with additional questions about your application.
  9. We verify that the design qualifies for an incentive and, upon approval, we forward a Contribution Agreement for the building owner's signature. The owner signs the Contribution Agreement and returns this contract to us.
  10. Request the initial payment using the Initial Payment Request Form. If all terms and conditions have been met, we will forward 80 percent of the incentive payment to the building owner.
  11. After the building has been constructed, you request the final payment by filling out a Final Payment Form. When we receive proof of project completion according to the approved design, we will forward the final payment of 20 percent.
  12. When the project is completed, a representative of Natural Resources Canada may present a certificate or bronze plaque at your building's opening.

In some cases, organizations can also apply for regional incentives through other governments and utilities in addition to IBIP funding. After your building is completed, we encourage owners to continue their commitment to energy efficiency as an Industrial Energy Innovator.
