- INDEPTH: Earthquakes in Canada
The tremor, with a magnitude of 4.5, was too gentle to cause damage, government seismologist Sylvia Hayek said.
But residents in the area noticed. Many callers to the CBC in Ottawa compared the sound to an explosion. A Montreal radio station also received calls.
The shake was strong enough to knock snow off cars, the Ottawa Sun reported.
Ottawa police received more than 150 calls from people who wondered what was going on, Sgt. Denis Cleroux said.
The west Quebec area is a fairly active earthquake zone, Hayek said.
There are fault lines in eastern Ontario and the area gets a quake about once a decade.
The Geological Survey said the quake was centred seven kilometres north of Thurso, Que., about 55 kilometres northeast of Ottawa.
