The following updates have been reported:

  • The Town of Stephenville adjusted the state of emergency to apply only to the damaged and evacuated areas. The town is continuing with all efforts to reinstate municipal services where possible.

Update #1: September 28, 2005

The following updates have been reported:

  • The town of Reidville (located approximately 50 kilometres northeast of Corner Brook ) also declared a local state of emergency on September 27 due to flooding. Some residents of the town were evacuated to Deer Lake but were allowed to return home on September 28. The town’s water system was affected and temporary repairs to the waterline were conducted on September 28.
  • In Stephenville, media reports indicated that close to 200 homes were evacuated on September 27 but more than half of the evacuees were able to return home the next day. The town’s water system was disrupted and repairs are underway.

Flooding in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador

On September 27, the town of Stephenville This link will open in a new window., Newfoundland and Labrador , experienced severe flooding because of heavy rainfall. More than 110 millimetres of rain fell in the region since September 26, with another 20–30 millimetres in the forecast for September 27. The Emergency Measures Organization in St. John's activated the province's emergency operations centre and is coordinating activities relating to the response effort with various towns. Stephenville declared a local state of emergency, and the town has activated an emergency operations centre. The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment set up a reception centre and shelter in the Armory. Ground search and rescue and the fire department are using boats and rafts to ferry people to safe ground. Approximately 80 homes have been evacuated to date. Multiple roads and highways have been closed.
