Robin Henneberry of East Pennant disappeared in the Pennant Harbour area at the beginning of the week. Searchers have found debris that may be the wreckage of his 12-metre boat, as well as an unopened life-raft.
Local fishermen are now retrieving the 40-year-old's lobster pots in an effort to narrow down the search zone, said Lieut. Pat Jessup of the joint search and rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax.
"They're doing that to establish a last known position ... so that we can figure out what the timing was. He has been missing, or was last seen two or three days ago, and it would be good to know how far along he was in cleaning out his lobster pots."
She said the search, which began at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, is becoming urgent because of the cold weather.
"Conditions are good for a search," she said. "If he's ashore somewhere and wet, we want to get to him."
Military aircraft were on the scene Wednesday, along with the Canadian coast guard vessels Sambro and William Alexander. Jessup also said Halifax Regional Municipality search and rescue ground crews are scanning the shoreline in the area.
Pennant Harbour is just west of Halifax on Nova Scotia's south shore.
