The Commission is an independent agency, created by Parliament, to ensure that complaints made by the public about the conduct of members of the RCMP are examined fairly and impartially.
The Commission is not part of the RCMP.
Commission reports make findings and recommendations aimed at correcting and preventing recurring policing problems.
The Commission's goal is to promote excellence in policing through accountability.

To provide civilian oversight of RCMP members' conduct in performing their policing duties so as to hold the RCMP accountable to the public.

- To conduct reviews when complainants are not satisfied with the RCMP's handling of their complaints
- To hold hearings and carry out investigations
- To report findings and make recommendations
