Welcome to the
Inventory of
Mining Industry Practices to Conserve
Wildlife and Habitat in Canada
INTRODUCTION
Canadians are becoming
increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining biological diversity.
A number of mining companies with operations in Canada are now integrating
wildlife and habitat conservation into their project planning, mine development,
and closure activities. Many of these companies also support wildlife-related
activities outside the mine development area as a measure of their contribution
to sustainable development. While some of these activities are regulated,
many of them are performed voluntarily as well.
Voluntary initiatives
are activities conducted by companies or other organizations that exceed
or exist outside the conditions of laws. Such activities can complement
legislation to better address the needs of both the natural environment,
and those of local communities.
The Minerals and Metals
Sector (MMS) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), in cooperation with
the Department of Environment and Resource Studies at the University of
Waterloo, has compiled the following Inventory of Mining Industry Practices
to Conserve Wildlife and Habitat in Canada. This inventory catalogues
wildlife-related activities performed by the mining industry in Canada.
In addition to being
an information source for companies and organizations to implement their
own habitat and wildlife-related activities and management systems, the
inventory will also serve as a public education tool.
The inventory's goal
is to improve the exchange of information between those concerned with
the environment, and those concerned with the future of mining in Canada.
NRCan hopes that mining companies with operations in Canada will continue
to contribute additional information for the inventory which details
their practices to conserve widlife and habitat.
