Eligibility Criteria for Students

To be considered for Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) jobs, the student must:

  • be a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution;
  • be currently recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which they are presently enrolled or be part-time students who are recognized by their academic institution as having a disability;
  • be returning to full-time studies for their next academic term*;
  • be registered in the FSWEP national inventory; and
  • be the minimum age to work in the province or territory where the job exists.

* For example, assuming a three-term academic year (Fall, Winter and Summer):

  1. A full-time student during the Fall 2005 and Winter 2006 terms who returns to full-time studies in the Fall 2006 term is eligible;
  2. A full-time student during the Winter 2006 and Summer 2006 terms who returns to full-time studies in the Winter 2007 term is eligible.

Note: Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are only eligible to work part-time until the completion of their last academic term. Managers must ensure that students hired in their final year are not employed beyond their last academic term.

Citizenship
Preference is given to Canadian citizens.

Student employment programs are exempt from the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA), with the exception of section 39(1), which deals with citizenship resulting in preference given to Canadian citizens.
