Rates of Pay
Rates of pay for students are determined by the Public Service Human
Resources Management Agency of Canada (PSHRMAC) and are subject to
change.
Secondary
students must be paid at the regional hourly pay rate indicated
in the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Students.
Post-secondary
student pay rates are influenced by the following
variables:
- Rates for post-secondary students are based on the student's
current academic level (i.e. college, university- undergraduate,
master's,
doctorate). For example, a student pursuing a Bachelor's degree is
paid according to the University/ Undergraduate student pay structure,
whereas students pursuing a college diploma will be paid according
to the College/Cégep structure.
- Since there is a range of salaries, the rate of pay selected
should allow for a meaningful progression in the salary range on
subsequent
assignments. At the discretion of the manager, pay at any step above
the minimum may be paid:
- to students who are re-employed as defined by the Public Service
Commission (PSC); or
- to students who possess some previous relevant work experience;
or
- where there is a shortage of students in the field of
study required; or
- when a university degree or year of study
is required as a prerequisite for another program, such as a bachelor
of Law, Education,
Medicine, Pharmacy or Veterinary Sciences program; or
- to students
who have completed more than one year of study in their present academic
program.
- A pre-university course/program taken at a university is to be
remunerated at the college/cégep level.
- A student who has completed a university degree and continues
his/her studies at the college level in a related field of study
shall be paid at the step in the salary range for university undergraduate
studies which is not less than the salary earned in the previous
year.
- A student who has completed a university degree and continues
his/her studies at the college level in an unrelated field of study
shall be paid at the step in the salary range for college studies.
Please note that some departmental programs use separate pay
rates.
Students working at an isolated post may be entitled to an isolated-post
allowance.
